While Drake has long reigned supreme in Canada thanks to his work in helping get both Toronto and Canada on the map when it comes to the rap game, 2018 was definitely not his year. While he may have done well when it comes to Spotify streams and album sales, his reputation in Canada has taken a serious hit as a result of multiple situations throughout the year.
With the start of a new year, you would think Drake would be attempting to enter 2019 under the radar and focus on getting back into Canadians' good graces. Instead, Drake's latest actions didn't just upset Canadians, but fans across the globe and it's landed the Toronto rapper into his first controversy of the year, only three days into 2019.
It all started when Drake posted this photo on his Instagram with the caption "2019 cook up... Aubreezy."
Pictured are both Drake as well as rapper/singer Chris Brown at a New Year's Eve party. Brown has been an especially controversial artist after he attacked Rihanna in 2009 though this isn't the only issue Brown has had in the past. The rapper/singer has also had a restraining order placed on himself after stalking his ex-girlfriend, Karrueche Tran. As a result, the stardom Chris Brown had pre-2009 has nosedived in the years since.
Clearly, if anyone were to boycott Chris Brown, it would be Drake considering his history with Rihanna and very public admissions of his love for her. Considering Brown's rocky past with Rihanna and Drake's personal relationship with Rihanna, fans would assume that Drake would never work with Brown. Instead, it seems Drake is actually alluding to working with the controversial artist in 2019 and it looks like something could be released soon.
Drake's fans weren't about to excuse the rapper or let him move on from the picture and caption choice quietly and instead roasted him for his decision and hypocrisy when it comes to caring about Rihanna:
I guess 2019 is the year we’re throwing drake in the trash now too, damn— Sam (@sam_kauf) January 5, 2019
I mean imagine expressing your love for Rihanna and then making music with someone who tried to kill her
Drake made music with Chris Brown? REALLY?! I thought Drake loved Rihanna. Now he’s making music with her abuser. pic.twitter.com/GqauLCe3xz— Sam (@Samantha_1713) January 5, 2019
Drake definitely isn't starting 2019 off on the right foot, to say the least, and it's safe to say that the chances of a Drake and Rihanna reunion are non-existent at this point. As usual, Rihanna is staying quiet on the situation. While Brown has tried to provoke Rihanna in the past, the singer has stayed quiet on the situation and opted to focus on her makeup line and upcoming album.
