Transgendered actors and actresses don’t usually get much attention unless they're passed over for a role like when Scarlett Johansson recently received so much hate for agreeing to play a trans person she dropped out of the film.

Well, this week we bring you the story of a trans actress who’s actually making headlines for landing a leading role.

Her name is Nicole Maines and she’ll be playing Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, on the show Supergirl and it’s been a long road for her to get to where she is.

The 20 year-old-actress first gained attention not for her acting, but for a lawsuit. Back in 2014, she sued her school district in Orono, Maine after she wasn’t allowed to use the women’s washroom.

The case went all the way to the highest court in the state, which rules in Nicole's favour saying that school officials violated anti-discrimination laws by forcing her to use the staff washroom instead.

It was the first time a state high court ruled that a transgender person should have access to the washroom of the gender with which they identify.

Nicole and her family were given $75,000 in compensation.

This won’t be Nicole's first time on film, she appeared on an episode of the show Royal Pains back in 2015.

She’s also been a part of some documentaries about trans people, including an HBO one called The Trans List.

This will be her first real chance to get some serious exposure for her work and we all can't wait to see what she does with it.
