Well, there's never a fashion week without a little drama.. right? Though the drama didn't take place on the runway this season it did star one of the biggest models in the business right now, none other than Gigi Hadid. The 22 year old model has been opening and closing for the biggest names in the business, though in recent years she has been making headlines for her drastic weight loss transformation.
The big change began noticeable by fans of Hadid as well as fashion lovers after Marc Jacobs had responded to why he had dressed Hadid in a poncho for one of his shows a couple years back saying "she doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin." He quickly tried to take back his comments after he received an insane (but completely warranted) amount of backlash, but once those things are out in the air there's no way to really take them back.
Since then fans have been convinced that the comment was what sparked Gigi's dramatic weight loss and is the reason why she is so thin now, though in comparison to her model mates she now "fits in" on the runway. Before she was considered "curvy" in the eyes of high fashion. While the speculation has been around for a while, it seemed something must have pushed Hadid to a breaking point as she took to Twitter this weekend to rant about the things people have had to say about her body:
For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me “too big for the industry” were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc ... I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
Although stress & excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better. I may be “too skinny” for u, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and (cont)— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
(cont) am still learning and growing with my body everyday, as everyone is.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesnt suit ur “beauty” expectation, shouldnt have to. Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because u dont understand the way my body has matured.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
Please, as social media users & human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid)
Her rant made it clear that the drastic change between her "curvier" self and her now smaller frame was the product of a lifestyle change after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. The autoimmune disease can often attack your thyroid that controls your metabolism and lead to weight fluctuation and bloating. While we think Gigi has always looked incredible, it was nice to see the model finally speak up for herself and shut the body-shamers out!
