Even though Halsey and G-Eazy's Him & I was a total banger, we haven't listened to it since the couple called it quits (for the final time) back in October. But, thankfully, Halsey didn't make us wait long for a new jam. She dropped Without Me right around the same time she and G-Eazy broke up for good. In a recent interview with Glamour, the pop star opened about how her music helped her cope with her split from G-Eazy.
When Halsey and G-Eazy broke up for the first time in July 2018, she shared the news on Instagram. "I normally keep this kind of thing private but provided our public nature I feel I need to inform my fans," Halsey wrote. "G-Eazy and I are taking some apart. I'm eager to continue the upcoming passage of time dedicating myself to my art and career, and the duration of my tour. I wish him the best. Thanks for respecting our privacy at this time."
I thought it was pretty admirable Halsey had the courage to share something so personal with her fans. Rather than communicating through a spokesperson, she took the message straight to the people she knew cared the most. But, after such a public acknowledgment, fans were understandably confused when she and G-Eazy rekindled their romance a month or so later. Love is complicated??
Instead of turning to Instagram after their second breakup, Halsey told Glamour she used her music to tell the story. "The biggest lesson I learned was to make art, not headlines," she said. "Because it can become quite easy, in the social media generation, to go from being a musician to becoming a personality." Halsey said Without Me is "about caring for someone so much that you lose sight of yourself."
Sure, Halsey didn't come right out and tell us she and G-Eazy were done. The second time around, she let her songs speak for her. TBH, I'll take the perceptiveness of Without Me over an Instagram statement any day. I don't expect celebrities to share ~*everything*~ on their social media accounts, but I do expect them to be genuine in their art.
