After a ton of extra activity by Taylor Swift this past week, the singer finally dropped her first single in years. Not 'Timeless', as fans originally thought, but 'Look What You Made Me Do'. While the world was shook by Taylor's clean social media sweep and definite resurgence, no one anticipated the singer would truly take her music in a direction so opposite from her past.
'Look What You Made Me Do' is just as passive aggressive as it sounds and honestly we have a lot of feelings about the actual music, lyrics and lyric video subsequently. Join us, for a detailed break down of Taylor Swift's attempt at a revenge track.
I don’t like your little games, don’t like your tilted stage
The role you made me play. Of the fool, no, I don’t like you
I don’t like your perfect crime, how you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine, Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you
Okay, so in my mind, this is totally about Kanye for a couple reasons. 1. Ye famously performs on a tilted stage for The Life of Pablo Tour and even Yeezus. 2. "the role you made me play" alludes to Taylor Swift wanting to be 'excluded from this narrative' when Kanye put her on blast for pretending to have a problem with 'Famous.
But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!
'I rose up from the dead' makes me think this another Kimye reference, seeing as Kim buried Taylor alive in receipts last July, prompting some people to tweet #RIPTaylorSwift. Also, I associate red with Yeezus pretty often but it's safe to say she's just referencing a colour. Checking her list once then twice like Santa Claus doesn't exactly scream ~*threatening*~. But it does let us know that Taylor has more than one person she's coming for.
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do, look what you just made me do X 2
Honestly the title of this song just sounds like something an abusive spouse or a super mentally unstable person would say right before they snap. Hard to rationale why Taylor would identify with what I'm picturing as a 300-pound WWE wrestler but maybe that's who the new T-Swift is on the inside?? If a dude/girl/angry country singer ever says, "Look what you made me do," just please run. For me.
I don’t like your kingdom keys, they once belonged to me
You ask for a place to sleep, locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world goes on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure
Baby, I got mine, but you’ll all get yours
Kingdom keys could allude to Kanye's "Watch The Throne" album. The fact that Ye has the keys makes sense because a lot of people sided with Kanye after Kim released the video proving Taylor Swift knew about the 'Famous' lyrics. 'You asked me for a place to sleep' might mean asking Kanye or Katy Perry for a truce, "locked me out and threw a feast" most likely references Katy Perry's 'Bon Appetit'.
When Taylor says 'the world moves on', I think the singer is hoping that we forgot about all the drama she caused last year, and she also lets us know that even if the world is over what happened - she isn't. The plural use of "You'll all get yours" alludes to not only Kimye, but Katy, and anyone else who messed with her - like the media or Twitter trolls.
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams X 3
(Look what you made me do)
This imagery alludes back to Taylor's "Blank Space", saying basically if you thought that was a nightmare...there's more to come. I already know this song is going to haunt me, but that's just because I feel it melting my eardrums from the inside out.
(Look what you made me do)
“I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.”
“Oh ’cause she’s dead!”
This is debatably the most extra part of the entire song, sounding like a Lana Del Ray line gone horribly wrong. The phone call aspect of the reference is interesting, as it nods at the famous Kanye call. Taylor infers that she won't be playing nice or accepting any apologies from any one anytime soon.
To make it even worse, the day Taylor's releasing her album? Just happens to be the anniversary of Donda West's death - Kanye's mom, if you're not aware. If Taylor is actually trying to come for Kanye....she better be ready.
