Here's How Meghan Markle's Engagement Ring Is A Touching Tribute To Prince Harry's Mother

The ring's meaning is priceless.

If you're not hiding under a rock, you'll know that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married next year.

In their first public appearance just a few hours ago, the newly-engaged couple posed for photos at Kensington Palace Gardens, which was dedicated to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, this year for the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death.

This was, of course, where Markle had the chance to show the world her ring.

Press asked the usual questions such as whether the proposal was romantic and when Harry knew Meghan was the one (“The very first time we met," he said), but everyone was mostly interested in the engagement ring, so here's the story.

Markle's stunning diamond engagement ring, which Harry designed himself, actually has a special connection to the Prince's late mother, Princess Diana.

The ring's centre stone is a diamond from Botswana, a country that the couple visited while they were dating and one that holds a special place in Harry's heart. The outside two diamonds are from his late mother's collection. The stones sit on a gold band that was made by the queen's jeweller, Cleave and Company.

Harry and his brother, Prince William, inherited Diana's personal jewellery collection after her 1997 death in a Paris car crash. The collection contains some of Diana's most iconic jewels, including the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara that was a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth, which Kate Middleton has worn three times.

Interestingly, Harry actually the right to the sapphire and diamond ring that Diana had from her engagement to Prince Charles, but gave it up when his older brother proposed to now-Duchess Kate Middleton. So Markle, who could have had Kate's ring, now has the incredibly designed diamond ring from Harry.

As for the wedding details, Clarence House has announced that the wedding will take place in Spring 2018. It will be the biggest royal wedding his William and Kate walked down the aisle in 2011.
