James Franco might have won big at the Golden Globes for The Disaster Artist but his comments during interviews regarding #TimesUp sparked some serious allegations and drama on Twitter. The allegations have people questioning the integrity of people who wore the #TimesUp pin where some stars have already been exposed for recently supporting Hollywood's abusers yet claiming to support the movement at the same time.
The 39-year-old star came under fire on Twitter after a user named Violet Paley tweeted some bold allegations in regards to an event that she claims to have happened when she was aged 17. Just after the Globes star had made statements like "standing up to sexual assault is everybody's responsibility" to stand up against.
Violet added more context to the situation after news outlets began to ask for commentary. She noted that while she had been in a consensual relationship with the star at the time, the instance she was referencing was not consensual. She also clarified that during the time everything happened she was an adult.
Though it wasn't just Violet Paley who had something to say about Franco's recent turn of support for the #TimesUp campaign. An ex-student of Franco's acting school shed a light on her own experiences with the actor:
The Breakfast Club's Ally Sheedy even had some things to say in since-deleted tweets where she mentioned James Franco. Tweeting "Why is a man hosting? Why is James Franco allowed in? Said too much." The claims by these women show just how complex the #TimesUp campaign is and how not every actor is being held accountable.
We shouldn't forget that this isn't the first time that James Franco has come under fire for his choices when it comes to relations with women. Back in 2014, Instagram DM conversations were leaked between him and a 17-year-old girl from Scotland who he met outside of his Broadway product of Of Mice and Men.
Franco's defense in response to the situation at the time? He told a radio host “seventeen is legal in New York, but that being said, it’s still pretty damn young,” Franco told the radio host. “They make it out like I’m pursuing young women. I’m not going to high schools looking for dates. I’m leaving my work and they’re coming here. So, I’m seeing attractive women.”
While neither Franco or his team have released a statement, it wouldn't be unlikely for the star to remain silent considering many actors who have been the receivers of allegations this past year have attempted to lay as low as possible. Though it definitely is interesting that a member of Hollywood spoke on James Franco specifically, even if they deleted the tweet. Only time will tell if the #TimesUp campaign will result in the exposing of more actors, James Franco possibly included.
