Kanye West is no stranger to being in the middle of a controversy, but we just found out why he finds himself in them so often. He recently confirmed that he was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and is using his past actions to highlight and spread awareness about the effects of being Bipolar. Kanye West wants to end stigma around mental illness.

The worry for Kanye’s mental health came in full force last year after he infamously referenced slavery as a choice in an interview with TMZ. After refusing to apologize and claiming to have had his words twisted to mean something else, the rapper deleted all social media accounts.

Now almost a full year later, Kanye is using his past mistakes to advocate for mental illness. In an interview with David Letterman he opened up completely about his struggles with mental health:

“When you’re in this state, you’re hyper-paranoid about everything. Everyone, this is my experience, other people have different experiences, everyone now is an actor. Everything’s a conspiracy. You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you’re being recorded. You feel all these things.”

In the interview, he also mentioned his erratic behaviour during his TMZ interview. We know in the past Kanye has admitted to worrying about how Kim would react to his actions, but it seems like the two of them are doing just fine. They actually just celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary. Kim told Vogue magazine just last month that they were in a good place.

He also goes on to describe what it feels like within society to have a mental illness, “It’s a health issue that has a strong stigma on it and people are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way.” He compared mental illness to being physically injured and said that his main goal is to break the stigma around this disorder.

Although having a mental illness is a rough journey, Kanye has people like Kim in his life to help keep him grounded.
