Kendall Jenner and her modelling career haven't been strangers to controversy, but it’s fair to say the 22-year-old is one of the most highly-paid and successful models in the industry. Oddly enough though, while Kendall has been showing off her street style looks in New York this fashion week, she hasn’t walked down a single runway- and people have noticed.
It’s true, Kendall didn’t join friends such as Kaia Gerber or sister duo Gigi and Bella Hadid in strutting down the runway this week, and she hadn’t been booked for any shows at all. While it's been said that the move was most likely Kendall's choice, many are convinced it has to do with the backlash Jenner faced earlier this month over an old LOVE Magazine interview.
In the interview, Jenner claimed she was “never one of those girls who would do like 20 shows a season or whatever the fuck those girls do” when asked about her career in modelling. While the quote had been out for a while, it wasn’t until fellow models started to respond to it that Jenner came out and claimed it was “a twist of her words” on LOVE Magazine's part.
I was misrepresented in a recent interview over the wknd & it’s important to clarify the meaning. It was intended to be entirely complimentary but unfortunately, my words were twisted & taken out of context.I want to be clear. The respect that I have for my peers is immeasurable!— Kendall (@KendallJenner) August 21, 2018
Models such as Victoria’s Secret Angel Leomie Anderson, Daria Strokous and others took to Instagram to call out the star’s privilege and laziness being disguised as selectivity when it comes to shows. Many noting that her stardom is what has afforded her the ability to pick and choose when she wants to walk, not talent.
It seems that Kendall's comments in the interview have some truth to them this season, as she definitely isn’t walking “20 shows a season or whatever the fuck those girls do.” She’s walking none.
I’m shocked but not surprised by this attitude. Not everyone gets to skip castings, get paid more than everyone else and generally work less- it’s not about being “selective”, it’s about not having to put the work in but still receiving all the campaigns and editorials. https://t.co/13WsCRUNT5— l. anderson (@Leomie_Anderson) August 20, 2018
While it still remains unclear if Jenner actually did opt out of this season willingly, or if fashion houses didn’t want the controversy (or a catfight happening behind their curtain), Jenner is still very much a part of this year’s spectacle.
Kendall is clearly still participating in NYFW - she attended the Harper Bazaar afterparty and sat on the sidelines at the Longchamp show to fill her absence from the runway scene. Either way, considering the tensions present between Kendall and her fellow models, her absence from the catwalk this season seemed like a smart decision.
