Over the past few years, fast fashion brands like Fashion Nova and Missguided have been popping up left and right. Speaking as a broke university student, I often like these brands because they offer cute clothes at super affordable prices, but many people involved in the luxury fashion industry absolutely hate them. Kim Kardashian sued fashion brand 'Missguided' and won $2.7 million.
Back in February, Kim posted a photo in a golden dress that her husband, Kanye West had designed for her. The dress looked great, but in the caption, Kim said she hadn't worn it yet, and asked fast fashion brands if they could wait until she actually did before they ripped it off.
Of course, it was only a matter of hours before Missguided announced that a similar dress would soon be available on their website, and they even went as far as directly tagging Kim in the Instagram caption.
The photo has since been deleted for Instagram, but the caption read, "The devil works hard but Missguided works harder 👀 @kimkardashian you've only got a few days before this drops online ⏰ Swipe 👉 #missguided #babesofmissguided 😂😂😂".
It was announced today, July 3rd, that Kim had successfully sued the clothing brand and won a total of $2.7 million, plus $60,000 in attorney's fees. The judge's ruling said, "Missguided has repeatedly used Kardashian's name and likeness without permission on its social media platforms to promote the sale of its clothing."
Although Kim has been actively studying law, it turns out she won the case by forfeit - Missguided never responded to the lawsuit, so the court awarded her a default judgment.
Apart from the small fortune Kim amassed from the lawsuit, Missguided is now also banned from using her trademarks for promotion of their products, which includes her face and other assets.
