While tons of stars graced the Grammy's red carpet yesterday, you may have noticed a certain ginger singer/songwriter that was missing from the awards show. Especially considering he was a nominated singer/songwriter up for some pretty big awards this year.
Yea, it's true Ed Sheeran did skip the Grammy's. Though it's not for the reason he's claiming he'll be quitting music in the near future. Rather the star was actually boycotting the awards this year. Why would he boycott an awards show where he was nominated? It all starts with his interview with Billboard.
When asked about his latest album Divide's absence from the Album of the Year category, he responded with "there's a very clear reason why that happened and it's bigger than me, like much bigger than me and it's just something that, again, it was meant to be, that is the way that this year was meant to roll out."
His comments took the rumours that the Grammy's had left the singer out of the category to avoid a 'race war' to new heights (the nominees in the category this year were Jay-Z, Lorde, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Bruno Mars who ended up winning the award last night). While people did still expect the star to show up for his other two nominations, it became increasingly obvious as the Grammy's date grew closer that Ed Sheeran was just flat out not going to attend as a protest to his album not getting the recognition he believed it deserved.
Fans of the artist and just Grammy watchers, in general, were not impressed, especially considering he took Best Pop Solo Performance even after boycotting the event, both fellow nominees Kesha and Lady Gaga being left in the dust.
While Ed has yet to comment on his win on social media, many are doubting he will considering the stance he has with the academy as of right now. Though who knows, maybe he'll pull a Cady Heron circa Mean Girls and ship everybody who was nominated a piece of the award?
