If you're a YouTube junkie or a lover of makeup, odds are you've heard of, watched, or follow Michelle Phan on social media. Touted as one of the OG makeup gurus of YouTube, she's been able to take her love of beauty and uploading videos and create a multi-million dollar company. She was even called the highest paid person on YouTube not that long ago.
Seemingly overnight Michelle went from filming beauty tutorials in her mom's kitchen to blowing up internationally and becoming a household name. However for anyone who follows Michelle Phan online, you already know that the digital media star she's been pretty M.I.A. these past few years.
Just last year she uploaded a video explaining why she disappeared from social media and her YouTube channel. However after posting the video Michelle pulled another houdini act and disappeared yet again, leaving fans wondering what was going on and if she had officially quit the content creation game.
Today though, Michelle decided to jump on her Instagram account to address her second long absence from the spotlight in an extremely honest set of posts.
In 33 instagram stories she addressed her time away, her mental health and some new projects on the horizon for her. She also gave her fans a pretty touching message about self-care.
She starts off her explanation saying, "It's been a year since my last video."
Michelle went on to say, "Society encourages us to hustle. Put in the hours, give it 200% and you'll reap the benefits. They don't tell us how the hustle game can mentally fuck you up".
Adding that the influencer life isn't as glamorous as it looks.
She revealed that after 8 years it had become fatiguing and that she needed a break. However she feared that anything longer than 3 months away would mean kissing her career goodbye.
Michelle said that she was left with only two choices:
Michelle explained that she knew that she was in a pretty unique position to be able to to walk away for such a long time and it was something she didn't take for granted.
She opened up about needing a break and learning that it's human for everyone to needs some time off and that it's totally okay to do what you need to take care of yourself.
She told her fans:
Then ended her chat with a sincere thank you to her fans.
And just before she ended her long IG story she left fans with a 'coming soon' video and a swipe up that leads to an Em Cosmetics mailing list/ subscriptions page. So I think it's (hopefully) safe to say that Michelle is back with some cool and exciting makeup projects on the way.
We're sure that her 8.9 million YouTube subscribers, 2 million IG followers and her makeup junkies are happy to hear the news.
