Love wasn't mean to be in the air. Grey's Anatomy's Giacomo Gianniotti shared that Andrew DeLuca and Meredith Grey's relationship was never planned from the start. He was even told to keep away from her at first!
The Italian-Canadian actor spoke with Us Weekly recently about his role in the series as Meredith's love interest.
He shared that "When I started on the show everybody was like, 'Hands off Meredith Grey. Don’t you touch her.'"
Ellen Pompeo has played Meredith since the very beginning in 2005. Her most significant relationship was with attending neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd who started off as a one night stand, turned into her boyfriend, then became her husband and father of three children.
Of course, McDreamy got killed off in season 11 after actor Patrick Dempsey wanted to part ways with his 10-year role.
That was right around the time that Gianniotti first joined the cast as a guest on season 11 in 2015. In season 12, he became a series regular and now the show is in its sixteenth season.
While grieving the loss of her husband, Meredith apparently wasn't meant to form any sort of relationship with DeLuca.
Gianniotti told that Us Weekly that "I was like, 'Meredith Grey, that’s not what I was brought on the show for. I’m just the new intern.' And then I totally put my foot in my mouth because years later Krista Vernoff, our showrunner, came to me and said, ‘I want to explore a romance between you and Ellen. I think it would be really great. You guys are such good friends. I always see your chemistry on set, you guys fooling around with each other and playing pranks with each other and just having a good time.'"
He continued, "I think for my character it’s been complex because it’s how do you handle a woman that’s that powerful? As a young man, it’s intimidating. She’s so accomplished in her career as a surgeon. She has an ex-husband she was widowed by, she has children. This is a lot for a character who is roughly 30 years old, like I am, to take on."
Love and loss are huge themes in the medical drama series and the two have gone through a ton together.
Meredith recently lost her last standing confidant, Alex Karev, after actor Justin Chambers abruptly left the show in January.
Gianniotti shared that Chamber's departure was hard for the cast but understandable since he's spent 16 years working on the series.
That's not the only sad news the 30-year-old discussed.
Us Weekly also reported that Gianniotti said that after season 17, it might all end.
“At the moment, we have one more season locked in and I feel pretty confident that that’s where it’ll end, I think, from the conversations that I’ve had with people,” Gianniotti said. “Then again, the studio and the creatives love the show and want it to go on forever.”
Whenever it does end, let's hope Meredith and DeLuca still find true love.
