Grocery Shopping App Is Fighting Food Waste With Cheap Groceries In Quebec

A grocery shopping app is fighting food waste by offering Canadians cheap groceries. The FoodHero app lets you shop for groceries at a discounted price that would normally just go to waste. So not only will you save money, you'll be doing something good for the environment too.

With FoodHero, shoppers can choose from products nearing their best before dates that are considered surplus which the grocery store hasn't managed to sell in-store yet.

You can save a lot on groceries with prices marked down at 25% to 60% off and grocery stores don't have to throw out food.

"Food waste is becoming a major concern for more and more Quebecers, and FoodHero is a simple, concrete solution that lets them act on it, on a daily basis if they want. We're very happy it's been so popular with IGA customers," said Jonathan Defoy, FoodHero founder, in a news release.

The app launched back in May and is now operating in almost 200 IGA grocery stores across Quebec.

FoodHero hopes to eliminate the economic and environmental costs of food waste for retailers like emissions and the cost of sending unsold products to landfills.

Using the app is so easy, there are only three steps.

First, you geo-locate your nearest IGA grocery store where you want to shop.

Second, you scroll through the available products and select the ones you want to buy.

Third, you purchase the items and pick them up at the store you selected earlier. Your items will be ready for you in a FoodHero bag.

IGA has been operating in Quebec since 1953 and is owned by Sobeys Inc. According to the IGA website, more stores in Quebec will use FoodHero soon.

"We are very proud to collaborate with a Quebec tech company such as FoodHero and we want to highlight the active involvement of our store owners in the program. Their efforts enabled us to roll out this anti-food waste initiative very quickly, offering an additional alternative to nearly 200 IGA locations across Quebec," said Carl Pichette, vice president of Marketing for Sobeys Inc., in a news release.

New deals are released on the app every day on almost every grocery department including meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs and prepared meals.

When you download the app, you'll save $5 on your first order.

IGA stores in Quebec are also asking shoppers to bring their own reusable containers when buying prepared meals and other food that aren't pre-packaged.
