12 Atlantic Film Festival Parties You Must Attend This Week In Halifax

With the Atlantic Film Festival kicking off tomorrow, we thought we’d break down all the VIP events happening in Halifax that you definitely won’t want to miss! All parties are open to festival pass holders, so make sure to pick up a Festival Experience Pass at the Park Lane Mall asap if you haven’t already because they’re running out fast.  Certain events can also be attended by ticket holders, check online to grab tickets for the specific events you wish to attend.

1. AFF Opening Night Gala // September 15th

Catch the AFF Opening Night Film Maudie, paying at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium tomorrow evening at 7pm. The film is a retelling of the unique love story between famous Nova Scotian artist Maud Lewis and her husband Everett, starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

2. AFF Opening Night Party // September 15th

After seeing Maudie at the Rebecca Cohn, head over to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and celebrate the launch of the 36th Atlantic Film Festival with a fun night of partying!  Doors open at 9pm.

3. Atlantic Weirdos Gala // September 16th

The festivals second film Atlantic Weirdos will be playing this Friday at The Oxford Theatre at 7pm. The film is a coming of age story set in 1970’s Nova Scotia, and does an incredible job of capturing what childhood was like in this province at the time. If you can’t get tickets to opening night there will be an encore Saturday, September 17th at Park Lane Theatre.

 4. Atlantic Party // September 16th

Following Atlantic Weirdos there will be an after party at Casino Nova Scotia to celebrate the films release.  In the style of Weirdos the party will be a 1970’s “Disco Inferno” theme!  Don’t forget to dress up and jam out to some of the hottest 70’s disco tunes.

5. Festival Music House // September 17th

Presented by the Radio Starmaker Fund, this Saturday at The Marquee there will be performances from Paper Lions, Amelia Curran and The Joel Plasket Emergency to kick of the 2016 Atlantic Film Festival. Admission to this legendary party is exclusive to Festival Pass holders.

6. American Honey Gala // September 18th

Winner of the 2016 Cannes Jury Prize, American Honey follows a teenage girl from a troubled home, who runs away with a travelling sales crew selling magazine subscriptions door to door. Starring Shia Labeouf and Sasha Lane, American Honey will be playing at the Oxford Theatre at 7pm.

7. Reel East Coast Shorts // September 18th

This Sunday at 7pm also at the Oxford theatre, catch nine incredible short films made by East Coast filmmakers addressing stories all across the country and the world.

8. Theatre of Life Gala // September 19th

Next Monday at 7pm Peter Svatek will be showing his documentary Theatre Of Life at the Oxford Theatre on Quinpool Road. The film follows Italian Chef Massimo Bottura on his mission to transform food destined for the dumpster into healthy, nutritious meals for the homeless.

9. Juste La Fin Du Monde Gala // September 20th

Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2016 Cannes International Film Fesitval, this French film with English subtitles follows a writer who goes back to his hometown with plans to announce his upcoming death to his family. Starring Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel, Juste La Fin Du Monde plays at the Oxford Theatre at 7pm.

10. Perfume War Gala // September 21st

The 7pm showing of Perfume War will be the world premiere of this inspiring documentary, which explores the friendship between 7 Virtues founder Barb Stegemann and Afghanistan war veteran Captain Tervor Greene as they work toward a mission of peace.

11. Closing Night Gala // September 22nd

The AFF 2016 closing night gala will feature a showing of Manchester By The Sea starring Casey Affleck, whose character in the film is granted custody of his teenage nephew following the death of a brother. Also starring Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler, the Manchester showing starts at – you guessed it! – 7pm at The Oxford Theatre.

12. AFF Closing Night Celebration // September 22nd

In celebration of the 36th annual Atlantic Film Festival, head over to Pacifico Night Club and party all night long to celebrate the hard work put into this incredible festival! Doors open at 9pm.
