16 Free Activities You Can Do In Nova Scotia To Make The Most Of Fall

There's so much awesome stuff to try!

The coming months will bring changing leaves, warm drinks, pumpkin pie and lots of time spent outside before the snow starts to fall.  All over Nova Scotia, communities will be coming together to celebrate the last few days of warm weather with block parties, cook-outs, craft conventions and outdoor movie showings.  And what better way to enjoy fall than with free events?!

1. Artists & Conversation - Tuesday, September 13th

The Nova Scotia Masterworks Awards Foundation will be hosting a free, public panel discussion with their 2016 Finalists regarding the work submitted to this prestigious competition. Come to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia tomorrow at 5:30pm and hear what the local creators of these outstanding works have to say about the art world in our province.

2. Wine and Cheese Festival - Friday, September 16th

All weekend long Pete's Fine Foods on Dresden Row will be serving up some French Alps inspired cuisine as part of their annual Wine and Cheese festival. While you're there enjoying the delicious wine and cheese selection, enter their in-store draw for a chance to win a Luckett Vineyards tour and tasting certificates for 4 people, a cheese and wine gift basket, a $100 Pete's Fine Foods gift card, and a $150 Da Maurizio restaurant gift voucher!


3. Full Moon Yoga - Friday, September 16th

Head over to Fort Needham Park Friday night and partake in some relaxing group yoga to celebrate the rising of the full moon. This is a free event put on by Lunar Lotus Yoga, but donations are welcomed!

4. Dal After Dark Presents: Bubble Soccer - Friday, September 16th

Dal and King's students are welcome to partake in this Dal After Dark event in the Studley Gym on Friday the 16th. Soccer starts around 7:30 - sign up will be on a first come, first serve basis. This event is being put on by Bubble Soccer Halifax, who bring this fun, wacky, full contact form of soccer to communities all over Halifax!

5. Meadquinox - September, September 17th

Every September, the folks at Scotch Lake Farm in Cape Breton throw an outdoor year end harvest, costume party and potluck that celebrates the fall equinox in Viking fashion. Those who wish to come out and enjoy the festivities are encouraged to bring one dish of food and lots of music to contribute! Local barbecued chicken and turkey will be served, alongside mead of course.

6. Open Farm Day - Sunday, September 18th

This weekend the beautiful Sainte-Famille Wines Ltd. will be combining their yearly Open Farm Day and Harvest Festival into one spectacular event. Come out to 11 Dudley Park Lane in Falmout to celebrate fall with delicious local food and wine!

7. Black Street Party - Sunday, September 18th

Black Street will be blocked off between Fuller and Northwood on Sunday the 18th for their annual street party festivities! Drop by any time to enjoy games, dancing, workshops, amazing play structures for kids, food, and overall awesome vibes. Feel free to arrive early and help set up, the party could always use with more volunteers. Check out their website here if you'd like perform or bring food to sell.

8. Prismatic Art Festival - Wednesday, September 21st

From Wednesday the 21st to Sunday the 25th, the Prismatic Art Festival will be hosting free events, talks, performances and work shops all over the city in an effort to make art more accessible throughout Halifax. Most events will be hosted at the Halifax Public Library, but don't forget to catch performances at The Bus Stop Theatre, and poetry readings at The Company House!

9. Portland Street Block Party - Thursday, September 22nd

Celebrate the first day of autumn in downtown Dartmouth at the annual Portland Street Block Party! Spend an afternoon enjoying live music, street performances and delicious food from local vendors. The party will take place on Portland Street between Alderney Drive and King Street.

10. Ardmore Outdoor Film Screening - Saturday, September 24th

The Ardmore Community Centre will be hosting this free outdoor film screening in Ardmore Park on the evening of September 24th. Starting at 7pm local short films will be aired, alongside the debut screening of the 4Cs Foundation Art Bikers' collaboration with kids in the Ardmore community. Bring a blanket or camping chair for seating and loose change for concession - donations are welcomed!

11. Cat & Dog Film Festival - Saturday, September 24th

Head over to the Dartmouth Animal Shelter at 5 Scarfe Court on Saturday the 24th for an evening of outdoor entertainment in support of your local rescue partners. There will be a barbeque going, candy, baked goods, children's activities and of course your favorite cat and dog videos under the stars on the big pop-up screen. Don't forget to bring your chairs!

12. Community Pancake Breakfast - Saturday, September 24th

Feed Nova Scotia will be hosting this annual community event at Vines Pasta Grill in an attempt to raise donations for their cause. Enjoy a free pancake breakfast compliments of Feed Nova Scotia and learn more about the great work they do around our city.

13. Bike-In Movie Screening -  Monday, September 26th

The Halifax Cycling Community will be hosting this outdoor movie screening at Good Robot as part of Desire Lines: A Celebration of Active Transportation in Halifax! E.T will begin playing at 8:30pm, and viewers are encouraged to bring their own blankets. One dollar from every beer purchased at the event will go towards making Halifax a safer more bike-friendly city.

14. HRM Artisan Moms Fall Craft Market - Friday, September 30th

Join this convention of crafters at Cole Harbour Place on Friday the 30th for the annual Artisan Moms Fall Craft Market. There will be lots of cool, locally made items to be purchased - including sewn items, baked good, homemade bath and body products, spices, make up and so much more!

15. Light The Night Halifax - Saturday, October 15th

Every year, communities across Canada band together and Light The Night in an effort to raise awareness and funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Participants can donate to be part of a team, or walk alongside those in solidarity with Leukemia victims and survivors. Light a lantern, and join more than 200 communities across Canada in showing support for this important society.

16. Nocturne - Saturday, October 15th

This year Halifax's annual Nocturne: Art at Night event will be celebrated on the evening of Sunday, October 15th, with installations and performances all over the city. Typically galleries and venues showing work will remain open from 6pm until midnight, making it possible for patrons to take in all the amazing exhibits creatively installed throughout the HRM.
