As the snow threatens to fall, our minds wander to warmer days, when the sun set at a normal time and the weekends were spent on a beach.  If you’re having some serious summer withdrawal and can’t afford to take a luxurious Caribbean vacation, scroll through some of the awesome suggestions we’ve put together for fun activates you can do in the HRM this winter.

Forgo an expensive vacation this year and try some of the sweet events we’ve listed below to help you ward off the winter blues, and once you get going you’ll see there’s always tons to do in the HRM regardless of what season it is!

Grab some festive cocktails

Pretend you’re on a Caribbean beach and grab some outrageous cocktails at one of Halifax’s many upscale bars and restaurants on your next night out. Take in the sweet décor at Lot Six on Argyle over a Quick Fix, or grab dessert and a tropical Ramos Gin Fizz at The Middle Spoon Desserterie on Barrington.

Hit up a few holiday craft fairs

If you can’t beat ‘em – join ‘em! Instead of resenting the cold weather, get into the Christmas spirit with one of Halifax’s many holiday craft markets. Check out the Halifax Lights Holiday Market in the Halifax Historic Properties, or pick up some gifts at the Christkindlmarket at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth.

Drive to Wentworth Valley for a ski trip

Only an hour and a half from Halifax, Wentworth offers some of the best downhill skiing in Nova Scotia, with accessible night skiing and cross country skiing trails available during season. Take some lessons at their snow school, or their intricate trail system if you’re already a pro! Make a weekend of it and rent a chalet with friends in the area.

See your favorite band live in concert

There are always sweet local acts playing at Gus’s Pub, The Carleton and The Seahorse, and this winter there will also be some huge acts touring through Halifax. Catch The Arkells play The Scotiabank Centre in February with Frank Turner, Wintersleep rock the Marquee January 14th and T.I perform at the Halifax Exhibition Centre January 31st!

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the exploring needs to stop! Hike some beautiful snowy Halifax trails this holiday season, like the Hemlock Ravine Park, the Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area and the Salt Marsh Trail – all within the HRM and covered in gorgeous scenery. Make sure to research your trail ahead of time, and keep an eye on weather conditions!
