9 Natural Remedies You Can Use To Get Rid Of Headaches If You're Sick Of Advil

Cause headaches ruin everything.

If you've suffered with headaches for a while, you know how awful they are. When people tell you just to 'take Advil' or 'drink more water' it makes you want to scream. While I still get headaches every once and a while, I used to get them daily. Debilitating headaches that I could probably blame on my diet, lack of water and from stress. However, I've overcome these headaches by these little tricks that not to sound dramatic, but definitely changed my life. 

Whether you get migraines, tension headaches, sinus headaches, or whatever, no one will ever know how bad, lazy and irritated they make you feel. Especially if you're one to get headaches super often as opposed to those who get them twice a year or just when they're hungover. 

If you suffer from headaches, I swear by these remedies. I used to pop Advil whenever I felt a headache coming on or had one, and that's just not good for your body at all. I stopped taking Advil, unless I've tried everything else on this list, but most times it's not needed. Natural remedies have such a bad rep for not working, but that's totally not true. Try these out next time you have a headache, and you can thank me later. 

Peppermint Oil 

My holy grail product. Peppermint oil comes everywhere with me and I'm not kidding. It's diffusing in my car as we speak. Peppermint oil is the most soothing, relaxing, and invigorating scent ever and not only does it smell great, it does wonders for headaches. I love walking around smelling like a mint, and it's cooling sensation on your face makes you forgot you ever had a headache. Putting it on your temples, chin, tip of your nose and the middle of your eyebrows really allows the peppermint oil to sink in and calm/get rid of your headache. You can buy peppermint oil at any health foods store. 


Magnesium 

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant, and when your body is super tense due to stress or whatever you're going through, a magnesium supplement can really help relieve the tension in your body and your headaches. However, it's best to take magnesium every single day so your body gets used to it. Since it's a supplement, your body actually needs magnesium to function properly. Try taking this in powder form so your body can absorb it quicker. 


Exercise 

Starting to exercise was definitely one of the main things that made my headaches disappear. Even now, if I have a bad headache and I exercise, it almost immediately goes away. If you have too bad of a headache to work out, even stretching or yoga can be super good for you. Getting your blood flowing and your body moving can help you forgot about your headache. A lot of times we focus on how bad our head feels, but finding a distraction is great for your body and mind. 


Cut out dairy and gluten 

You've probably heard this a ton, but these are common allergies that a lot of people don't know they have because they don't experience hives or any other symptoms besides a headache. However, I went to a naturopath who made me cut out certain foods for a while and then reintroduce them, and suddenly when I cut out dairy and gluten my headaches and brain fog that I had had for years disappeared. I know, gluten and dairy are super hard to cut out but I have not eaten them in 5 months and have never felt better. 


Also cut out caffeine 

Caffeine is super dehydrating, which can lead to headaches and even nausea. You're supposed to drink half your body weight in water each day, and if you find yourself only drinking water when you're brushing your teeth or only having a glass a day, you're definitely dehydrated. On top of that caffeine is so bad for the body, raising your heart rate and making you super jittery. If you want natural caffeine, try matcha. Or if you don't think you could ever get rid of coffee, try lowering it to one coffee a day. Caffeine headaches are no fun, but it will benefit you in the long run. 


B Vitamins 

Unfortunately, a ton of us are deficient in B vitamins without even knowing it. If you're always tired, have a headache, have brain fog, or just feel overall sluggish, you're probably lacking in vitamin B. Stress and anxiety is also a huge symptom of a vitamin B deficiency, so if you have all of those symptoms, it's best to talk to your doctor about getting a blood test. 


Ginger Tea

If you're someone who gets nauseous from your headaches, ginger will actually save your life. Ginger tea is super good for you for so many reasons, one being that it can help sooth your headache while soothing your stomach as well. Ginger can actually work just as well as prescription drugs, however it has no side effects at all. 


Foam Rolling 

Sometimes you're so tense and don't even realize it, and that's whats creating the terrible headache. When I have a headache, especially when it feels like it's in my back and shoulders, I grab my foam roller and go crazy. Investing in a foam roller is so good for you as it rolls out your muscles while sort of giving you a massage at the same time. I can't explain how good it feels when you have a headache to roll out your muscles and stretch!


Invest in a humidifier 

During the winter months the air is so incredibly dry that it can actually make your sinuses ache. If you find yourself getting sinus headaches and don't know why, it's probably because of how dry the air is. Humidifiers are a dream come true and up until this year I had never had one until I started getting sinus headaches daily because of how dry my apartment was. Once I turned on the humidifier it went away in minutes. You can get ones for pretty cheap, but investing in your health is super important! This is a must during the winter months.
