Here's Why Your Instagram Feed Might Be Flooded With Photos Of An Empty Plate Today

Spreading the word for a great cause

For many on this side of the planet, a missed meal evokes a sudden onslaught of hanger. (Cue the excessive use of steam-from-nose emojis to your S/O or passive-aggressive troll comments on your bestie’s latest IG post.) Even so, we all know the cure to this minor inconvenience is food, and typically it’s only a matter of time until we’re chowing down again.

But just imagine what it would be like if your next meal wasn’t a sure thing. For over 70 million people worldwide, it’s not just something to wonder about — it’s an everyday reality.

According to the United Nations, the number of displaced people is at an all-time record high, and many people don't know where their next meal will come from. That's why the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) created their monthly food-giving program, Share Your Table. It’s a way for people just like you and me to help make a big difference in the lives of those in need.

To spread the word, MCC is enlisting the help of 100 social media influencers. Today, these individuals will be giving up their feed to feed by posting a picture of an empty plate and using #feed2feed.

We're talking about influencers such as Emma Choo (65.1k followers), Winnipeg Eats (56.2k followers), Discoverelle (55.2k followers), Yvonna Chow (38.6k followers), Candied Chocolate (30.9k followers), and Glenda Decasa (27.3k followers). So, if your IG is suddenly filled with this same image on today, you'll know what's up — and you can join in on the movement too!

Whether by drought, flooding, conflict or other disasters, tens of millions have been forced to flee their homes, resulting in limited access to food. Just take Nyadieng Gach Gatkouth, for example. She’s been raising her one-year-old daughter in an Ethiopian refugee camp since fleeing civil war in South Sudan. And while they’re now safe from conflict, malnutrition is a deadly concern.

This is where Share Your Table comes in. They help feed South Sudanese refugees living in camps in the Gambella region of Ethiopia with canned meat. In large part pregnant women, nursing mothers and children between the ages of six months to two years are at the greatest risk for malnutrition, which is why MCC needs your help to give them what they need!

Share Your Table is a great way for you, your friends, family, and neighbours to make a difference in the lives of people just like Nyadieng. For just $7 a month, you can feed a family of five for an entire day. Guys, $7 is pretty much the equivalent of your DAILY venti latte — think about that for a sec.

Displacement may be complicated, but generosity never is. Plus, when you sign up for Share Your Table, you’ll receive monthly emails featuring stories from the families you’re helping. What better way to connect with your fellow humans while transforming lives? You’ll even get a favourite recipe from the family’s region, meaning you can make it yourself — it's sort of like sharing a meal together!
