There's A Mini Castle Hidden In The Trees Of North Carolina & It's A Magical Oddity

The sculptor is finally renovating it after all the vandalism.
Hidden Castle In North Carolina Is A Peculiar Fairytale Wonder

Your curiosity to discover fascinating things probably takes you to lots of places, but has it led you to witness a magical fairytale in the NC woods? This hidden castle in North Carolina is a made-from-scratch mystical wonder nestled in the forests of Durham. If you want to discover what many consider one of the coolest and best kept secrets in the state, you must take a trip to check out Castle Mont Rouge.

Castle Mont Rouge is definitely not your everyday find. The iconic oddity is hidden in the trees of a long mountain road about two hours from Charlotte. The special part about this structure is that it was built entirely by local artist and sculptor, Robert Mihaly.

Robert began building the castle in 2000 with original plans to make it a one-story building. Obviously, it is now much more than that with an unusually whimsical aesthetic.

He used it as a personal part-time art studio and home as an escape from reality. The peculiar exterior is constructed of marble and cinderblock, but the interior was left unfinished after the owner and his wife divorced.

According to Atlas Obscura, the design is meant to imitate a cultural mix of European towers and Middle Eastern minarets and cupolas covered in copper.

Adventure awaits beyond the city and it's surely worth the trek. Witnessing such a marvel would surely make anyone feel like they just stepped into a fantasy world.

We spoke to Robert, who informed us that the castle is on private property but that he gladly welcomes visitors. "It's best if people give me a call or text beforehand," he mentioned.

Sadly, the building has become a favorite among graffiti artists. The vandalized tower is also diminishing on the inside, with rotting wood, broken windows and debris. You may find it spooky, so if creepy abandoned spots are your thing, you'll enjoy this one.

However, it's looking like it won't be abandoned much longer. According to Charlotte Observer, Robert began restoring it and will continue doing so and even plans to open it to the public next year, potentially as an event space. When all is said and done, the finished product is expected to have cost $200,000!

Now is the perfect time to watch as the anomaly progresses into a renovated space that will hopefully open next year for all to explore in its entirety.
