Houston's Karamo Brown From Queer Eye Has A Pretty Incredible And Inspiring Life

We all know the Queer Eye stars are as relatable as it gets — it's why they're so loved. And with Karamo Brown, who specializes in Culture on the show being born in Houston, Texas, he just got even more relatable.

While he was born in the great city of Houston, he was raised in Comal Springs, Florida. We don't know much about his early life, for he has mostly kept quiet about his very early life, other than he came out as gay at age 16.

In 1999, he graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — the school that would become the infamous setting of the tragic 2018 school shooting. After the shooting at his alma mater, Karamo involved himself in the Never Again MSD movement, a PAC for gun control.

He went on to graduate from Florida A&M University with a degree in Business Administration and served as a social worker for nearly a decade.

His break-out gig was starring in the 2004 MTV series The Real World: Philadelphia. And it was sort of a break-out gig for the entire media field as he became the first openly gay black man on reality TV.

Now at age 38, Karamo has a published a book titled Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope that came out in March of this year. He also stars as one of the Fab Five in Netflix's mega-hit series Queer Eye that just released its fourth season this month.

In the memoir, he recalls finding out he had a 10-year-old son with an old high school friend from Houston named Stephanie Brooks. He met his son for the first time in 2007 among her other many sons from different fathers. He turned his life around to become a good and loving father to his new family member and ended up moving back to Houston to spend more time with his son.

He also grew close to Brooke's other son who lived with him and ultimately legally adopted him. He's been an active father to his two sons ever since who are now 18 and 22.

Karamo has been engaged to director Ian Jordan since May 2018 and currently lives in Los Angeles when he's not filming in different cities for Queer Eye, but we in Texas still claim him as ours. Once a Houstonian, always a Houstonian!
