Jagmeet Singh Is "On The Same Page" As US Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP have been gaining popularity in the last days of the Canadian federal election. Even if the NDP is currently polling at 17.4 percent only, Jagmeet Singh's Twitter has plenty of positive reactions from people who seem to just like him as a person. Singh has been open about his platform of taxing the wealthiest Canadians at a higher rate, and he seems to have found inspiration in a tweet from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In an October 15 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez wrote three simple words, keeping things well below Twitter's 280-character limit: "Tax the rich."
Like Singh, Ocasio-Cortez has been outspoken about higher taxes on the wealthiest people in society, suggesting a return to a 70 percent marginal income tax rate in the United States.
Singh shared the tweet on his own Twitter timeline, with an even more succinct message: "On it." He then posted a screenshot of the tweet to his Facebook page, adding the caption, "We’re on the same page."
Singh's NDP tax plan would specifically take aim at capital gains like investments, stocks, and bonds. It would also tax profits on the sale of second homes.
The party has also planned to increase the corporate income tax rate and introduce a "super wealth tax," which would tax Canadians with a net worth of over $20 million at one percent.
"The majority of people impacted by this will be the wealthiest. There are some that will be impacted in a small way that are not the wealthiest in society," Singh said of his plan, according to CBC News. The NDP claims that it can raise $30.5 billion next year if its tax plan is implemented.
The Canadian federal election will take place on October 21. The NDP is currently polling at 17.4 percent as of October 15, according to CBC's Canada Poll Tracker.
