We were busy swooning over the cover, but Justin Trudeau has received backlash from Indigenous peoples and activists for a comment he made in the interview with Rolling Stone.
While discussing his charity boxing match against Senator Patrick Brazeau in 2012, Trudeau told Rolling Stone: "I wanted someone who would be a good foil, and we stumbled upon the scrappy tough-guy senator from an Indigenous community. He fit the bill, and it was a very nice counterpoint."
Of course, Trudeau's poor choice of words that contribute to the perpetuation of negative stereotypes did not go unnoticed, and today he admitted that he regrets his comment. "The way I've framed it...doesn't contribute to the positive spirit of reconciliation that I'd like to think I know my government stands for. So, I regret those comments and the way it was characterized," he told CBC Radio One.
