TMZ has confirmed with NYC police that Spade took her own life by hanging herself with a scarf. She was pronounced dead at the scene and has apparently left a note.

The designer began her career working at Mademoiselle magazine in the 1980's and her last name comes from her husband Andy Spade, brother to David Spade. She met Andy while working in a clothing store during college.

Andy and Kate launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993 before it eventually expanded into jewellery and clothing. The couple got married in 1994 and have one child, a daughter, named Frances Beatrix Spade born in 2005.

Kate sold her brand in 2006, after stating she wanted to spend time with her family. She reentered the fashion scene in 2016 with her new fashion line Frances Valentine, named after her daughter.
