Meet Garrett Camp. A mere thirty-nine years-old, the Canadian businessman and investor is one of the co-founders of Uber and one of the richest people in North America under 40.

But maybe you didn't that Uber wasn't his first rodeo. He actually co-founded his first company while he was still in university. Not only is he a pro at making money, but knows how to share it as well. He's a part of The Giving Pledge, a promise to give away half of his wealth to charity. 

Well, from his arguably quiet beginnings to spearheading one of the world's largest companies, here are 17 surprising facts about the entrepreneur and the mind behind Uber. 

1. A proud-Canadian, Garrett was born and raised in Calgary. 


2. His mother was an artist and his father was an economist, but both left their careers to team up and do home renovations and makeovers. It's said that his entrepreneurial spirit comes from his parents. 


3. His elementary school was tiny, with a mere 150 students. His high school was larger, with close to 1,700 students.

4. He attended the University of Calgary and first received a degree in electrical engineering. 


5. Before receiving the degree, he interned at Nortel Networks in Montreal where he worked on speech recognition technology.

6. While in Montreal, he also took courses at Concordia University. 


7. The co-founder of Uber also co-founded StumbleUpon with two friends in 2002. 


8. Camp was still in university at the time StumbleUpon was founded, he was completing a Masters in Software Engineering. 


9. In 2007, StumbleUpon was sold to Ebay for $75 million. Garrett would later purchase back majority shares to be an advisor for the company.

10. Although there are multiple sources, it's said that Camp came up with the idea for Uber on a snowy night in Paris with Travis Kalanick - former Uber CEO. 


11. Other sources say that the idea came during New Year's, where he and his friends spent $800 for a private driver. Even through lucrative earnings with StumbleUpon, he found it too expensive. 


12. During one of Uber's first conferences, Travis Kalanick gave Garrett full credit for the company as "the guy who invented that sh*t". 


13. Uber was envisioned to be the equivalent of "nightclub bottle service for the taxi industry".

14. The company is surprisingly bigger than most think. Since its first expansion in 2011, they've expanded to Europe, the Middle East, Western Africa, and much of Asia. 


15. Although they've expanded worldwide, Uber has yet to conquer parts of Canada - most notably Vancouver and his hometown, Calgary. 


16. In 2016, he was named #3 in Richest Under $40 by Forbes Magazine. 


17. As of January 10, 2018, his real-time net worth is just over $5.1 billion.
