Even the spouses of our Canadian athletes are doing the most to represent our home and native land.
Take Shawn Germain, the husband of Olympic curler Rachel Homan, for example. He’s not even competing in the games and he’s already won the Olympics. It didn’t take much for him to do it, either:
Favourite Olympic moment so far: Canadian curler Rachel Homan's husband double-fisting his third and fourth beers while watching his wife compete against Japan. It's 9am in Korea. Not all heroes wear capes. #PyeongChang2018 pic.twitter.com/jzrVsu06Vi— Ben Johnson (@Ben_T_Johnson) February 19, 2018
Germain never intended to be in the spotlight, but he instantly became a symbol of national pride after his photo went viral on Twitter. People across the country were proud to see a fellow Canadian showing his Canadianness, even from the sidelines.
As for the haters who criticized his actions, Germain had only this to say:
You can judge all you want. The stress level is high, I’m not a drunk, I’m just Canadian. #WeBelieve— Shawn Germain (@GermainShawn) February 19, 2018
Germain had valid reasons to indulge in a couple of beers. His wife is the skip for the Canadian women’s curling team, and they have had an incredibly rough start in the Olympics so far. After three straight loses, the team managed to snag three straight wins, bringing their series to 3-3 and moving them up to 6th place in the tournament.
“We had to let go of the past and focus on the present, one game and one shot at the time,” said Rachel Homan. “Stay in the moment, but still enjoying our time here and our experience as Olympians. I’m really proud that we’re here representing Canada and we’re going to give it our all and leave it out there.”
