Here is yet another reason to be proud to be Canadian – Canada has been ranked as having one of the most powerful passports in the world in 2019. Canadians are fortunate to be holding a passport that is among the most powerful in the whole world, and this means that Canadians are able to easily travel to many countries without needing to obtain a visa beforehand.
Henley & Partners released their annual Passport Index for 2019 earlier this week on March 26. The list examines 199 passports and 227 different travel destinations in order to determine which are countries hold the most powerful passports in the whole world.
Canada was ranked as number sixth for having the most powerful passport in the world! With their passport, Canadians are able to visit a total of 184 countries visa-free, according to the rankings.
Both Canada and the U.S.'s passport ranked sixth on the Passport Index. Just like Canadians, Americans can also visit 184 countries without obtaining a prior visa. A few other countries also shared the number sixth spot with Canada – Greece, Ireland and Belgium.
Canada's passport has maintained the same ranking for the past few years. Since 2016, Canada has been ranked sixth on Henley & Partner's annual Passport Index. It even held the number two spot on the ranking back in 2014.
So which country was named as having the most powerful passport in the whole world? Three countries in Asia shared the number one spot on the list – Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Their passport holders are able to visit 189 countries without needing a prior visa.
The annual Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on how many countries they can enter without needing to obtain a prior visa. "Boasting cutting-edge expert commentary and historical data spanning 14 years, the Henley Passport Index is the original ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa," reads the rankings.
"The ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world’s largest and most accurate database of travel information, and it is enhanced by extensive, ongoing research by the Henley & Partners Research Department."
