Even if you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about the God's Plan video, and since then probably Drake's latest video drop for his new single "Nice For What." Though what you might not have known is that behind the camera was a young and emerging Toronto born director that is only 22 years old.
Meet Karena Evans, the director behind arguably two of Drake's biggest music videos and we're sure a lot more in the future. The 22 year old has been making serious waves in the industry ever since her internship at Popprok, manned by the ever so popular Director X who took her on as his protégé.
Evans had initially come to the company as an intern but X claims her incredible work ethic and creativity were the reason he kept her around and then eventually turned her from an intern into a director. Noting that she grinded "on low budget jobs giving big budget results" and that's exactly how she ended up getting to direct two music videos for one of the biggest names in rap right now.
It's not just Drake that Karena has worked with though, she also has directed visuals for Belly, SiR and Anders as well as companies such as Nike and ABC. She also was the first woman to be awarded the Prism Prize's Lipsett Award, the highest honors you can get in Canada for music video direction.
As of now 'God's Plan' has over 350 million views and over 5 million likes, and the already iconic 'Nice For What' video is sure to follow suit seeing as it already has 12 million views and is currently holding the #2 trending spot on YouTube.
What an honour. A privilege and a blessing to have told this story with every. single. one. of you revolutionary women. BOTH IN FRONT AND BEHIND THE CAMERA. This month long journey together, I’ll never forget. Thank you @champagnepapi for empowering us. This is a celebration of women. This is NICE FOR WHAT.
If you haven't checked out her work yet (though we highly doubt it), you can check out her 'God's Plan' video and her most recent 'Nice For What' videos by scrolling below:
