It's that time of year again! Now that Halloween has come and gone, it's finally time to get into the holiday spirit and that means sipping on some delicious Christmas-inspired coffee.
Canadians may be known for their loyalty to Tim Hortons and needing their double-double coffee, but only one coffee brand can be the king of speciality drinks. That crown always goes to Starbucks. Recall, for example, the enormous popularity of the Peppermint Mocha when it was first introduced 16 years ago. It has since become a holiday classic.
This holiday season you'll be able to grab a Gingerbread or Eggnog Latte, Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, as well as the Caramel Brulée and Chestnut Praline Lattes. Starbucks Canada also brought in for a limited time the new Juniper Latte, which Narcity has already reviewed.
Kristy Cameron from the Starbucks Creative Studio stated in a press release that this year's drink list was inspired by holiday seasons past. “Looking back at our heritage, we found something lovely in our own story, with beautiful coffee and flavours that come together to make the season magical," she explained.
While all the drinks embody the holiday spirit, one drink always tends to rise above the rest. That's why I, a Canadian millennial who drinks a minimum of three cups a day, tried all the Starbucks holiday drinks so that you don't have to.
Each cup I tried was not altered from its original recipe, just the way the coffee Gods at Starbucks would have intended. While all the holiday drinks are available iced or in Frappuccino form, I opted to drink each beverage hot since Canada has been getting some winter weather lately.
Here are my honest opinions about each of the six Starbucks Holiday drinks:
1. Eggnog Latte
Call me a hater if you want, but I absolutely hate eggnog, which made me really nervous to try the only holiday latte I had never previously tasted. That being said, the Eggnog Latte at Starbucks has me hooked and needing more.
The Eggnog Latte is very rich, considering it's made with real steamed eggnog, espresso, and then topped with nutmeg. While the drink can come with or without whipped cream, you definitely don't need it because of how seriously luxurious this drink is. Somehow I went from hating Eggnog to loving it after just one sip.
The Starbucks Gingerbread Latte is one of those classic holiday drinks that send you straight to the North Pole. While I think of it as a more indulgent Cinnamon Dolce Latte, the latte tastes (and smells) exactly like the gingerbread houses of my childhood.
The only complaint I had about the drink was that it was a little sweet for my taste, especially when decked out with whipped cream and nutmeg sprinkled on top. Still, if you're looking for something simple yet indulgent, this is the perfect drink for you!
The Caramel Brulée Latte is one of the newest additions to Starbucks' line of holiday beverages but it's already an absolute favourite. Considering this drink tastes like a caramel crème brûlée, its sweet, rich flavour will get you in the right mood for the holidays.
My favourite part of this drink is actually the topping on the whipped cream because it adds some texture! The crunchy caramel brulée pieces are flavourful and give you a bit of extra candy on this sweet drink.
If you're a fan of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, then you need to try this amazing latte. It is full of delicious, nutty flavours and also gives off an aroma that will remind you of Christmas Eve spent at Grandma's house.
Like the other holiday drinks, it's topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with chestnut praline topping (made out of spiced sugar and toffee sugar), making it super rich. Still, this latte is less sweet than the other holiday drink contenders due to its nut-based flavour.
Believe it or not, the White Chocolate Mocha was actually the first Starbucks drink I ever tried and is definitely the beverage that sparked my coffee addiction. So when the revamped Toasted White Chocolate Mocha was brought out it was an instant must-try.
This drink is incredible and super festive! The toasted white chocolate flavour doesn't overpower the drink and keeps it sweet without being too sickly. What really makes this drink amazing is the texture that comes from the red holiday sugar sparkles and crispy pearl toppings, which make this decadent mocha a really beautiful Christmas-time treat!
Did you know that the Peppermint Mocha was introduced by Starbucks in 2002 and that this year will be the 16th season it's been available? Everyone and their mother suggests this holiday drink and it's very clear why.
The Peppermint Mocha supplies the candy-cane taste of Christmas and combines it with the classic mocha that Starbucks has available all year round. We all know that peppermint and chocolate are a perfect combo, so this drink is literally the ultimate holiday classic to put you in the festive spirit, especially when it's topped with whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.
The Winner Is....
While it would be easy to hand the best holiday drink to the classic Peppermint Latte, one underdog stood above the rest this year. That's why the best holiday of 2018 is definitely the Eggnog Latte.
The Eggnog Latte is a one-of-a-kind drink available only during the holidays. Everyone has memories of sipping a glass of eggnog around a fire at Christmas time and this Starbucks coffee will transport you right back after one sip. You can enjoy a grande size Eggnog Latte at Starbucks this holiday season for only $5.45.
