Tim Hortons is about to double-double in size. A massive new two-storey Tim Hortons is being built in Ontario right now. On top of being taller than you're average Tims, this new location will also feature a patio.
The new location will be in Bowmanville, Ontario which is around anywhere from a one to two hours drive away from Toronto. According to the local paper, Clarington This Week, construction on the big, two storey structure has already begun at Green Road and Prince William Blvd in Bowmanville.
The paper also reports that the new Tim Hortons will have lots of elements that set it apart from other Tim Hortons locations. For example, on part of the property, there will be an outdoor patio space and lots of landscaping, perfect for chilling out in the summer and enjoying an iced coffee.
The building will also feature the kitchen and eat-in area on the main floor, which is 2800 square feet, and storage, offices, and a staff lounge on the second floor.
The construction on that Tim Hortons is now underway and the restaurant is expected to open sometime this summer, though a specific grand opening day has not yet been announced. It hasn't been an easy road to get here, however.
Back in early June of 2018, the team behind the new Tims were having trouble getting their plans for the massive new restaurant approved. That's because the Clarington town council was concerned about the drive-thru causing a traffic nightmare.
The original plans for the new two-storey Tims include a two-lane drive-thru, however, the council was hesitant to approve this plan, as the area is frequented by a lot of seniors and pedestrians.
One councillor, Ron Hooper said he gets a lot of traffic complaints from the seniors. He told Clarington This Week, in regards to a potential new drive-thru, "[The seniors] are concerned for their lives now. There's going to be an awful lot of traffic there trying to get in."
Despite concerns, the plans for the Tim Hortons were eventually approved and the construction is now well underway. The new restaurant is expected to relieve some of the customer congestion at the other Tim Hortons in town, which is located at Bowmanville Avenue and Baseline Road.
