A Canadian rapper named Jon James McMurray tragically lost his life on Saturday after a stunt went terribly wrong during his music video shoot in BC. McMurray fell from the wing of an airplane as he attempted to walk across it mid-flight. Which seems like an extremely risky thing to do for the sake of cool footage. But, McMurray had reportedly trained "intensively" for the stunt for months and was a highly-experienced stuntman.
As McMurray walked his way towards the edge of the wing, the plane malfunctioned and spiralled downwards uncontrollably. According to reports, "Jon held onto the wing until it was too late, and by the time he let go, he didn't have time to pull his chute. He impacted and died instantly."
McMurray had a pretty big fan base in Canada and all over the world, with nearly 18,000 Instagram subscribers and over 400,000 Spotify streams on his most popular single. These are the things that he was known and celebrated for, and the little-known details of his career.
He was from Calgary, AB
The 34-year-old rapper grew up in Calgary, where he started his career in the action sports industry. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue rap.
He was married to a Playboy model
According to her Instagram bio, McMurray's wife Kali James is a Playboy model and rapper. She's been featured in several of his music videos. In the days following his death, Kali James has posted several heartbreaking tributes to McMurray.
"He was such a light to so many people on this earth and we are all so proud of him for living out his dreams," she wrote. "Guys let’s live his legend out for him because he really wanted to make an impact on people’s life."
He had seven major surgeries
McMurray's dangerous stunts have landed him in the hospital with serious injuries seven different times. Some of his most serious injuries include a fractured neck and a broken back.
He used to be a professional skier
Before rap, McMurray was an accredited professional skier, known for combining freestyle skiing with crazy stunts. He was featured in several action sports productions and even got a shoutout in Sports Illustrated.
He was the first-ever pro athlete to land a crazy backflip
This wasn't just any backflip - it was a backflip while transferring from one rail to another. McMurray was the first action sports personality to successfully stick the landing, and he did it on skis. If that's not talent, I don't know what is.
His music career started after a serious injury
McMurray was forced to sacrifice his dreams of becoming a pro athlete after a serious back injury and a shattered heel. But, by incorporating epic stunts into his music videos, he was able to combine his love for action sports and music into one.
His alter ego was a lion named Rex Leo
Take one look at McMurray's Instagram and every other photo is of him dressed in a massive lion's head mask, either driving a luxury car or surrounded by women in bikinis. McMurray referred to the lion as Rex Leo, which is also the title of his 2016 album. From the photos, it looks like Rex Leo had a pretty enviable lifestyle.
McMurray's loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page to support the family with the costs associated with his "celebration of life," which they have decided to organize instead of a traditional funeral to honour McMurray's "passion for life."
"The rest of the fund, in its entirety, is dedicated to releasing all of Jon James’ remaining music and video content for the world to see, hear, spread and enjoy," the page reads. So far, the campaign has raised $2,800 of the $699,000 goal.
