No one should have to face any kind of unfair treatment in the workplace. In the #MeToo era that we are currently living in, the number of people - mainly women who are bravely coming forward to speak about harassment they face at work is unprecedented.
Now The Canadian Union of Public Employees, the union which represents 8,500 flight attendants, work for both Air Canada and Rouge Airlines is standing up for their workers and speaking up on unfair and unequal treatment to demand better and more for the Canadian company.
According to the union's report, Air Canada's official policy for uniforms and makeup are discriminatory towards females on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and race.
The union says it has filed a human rights complaint alleging “systemic discrimination and harassment” of the flight attendants it represents.
The union also says that Air Canada's onboard service managers have made remarks that are sexist, racist and homophobic in nature and engaged in “inappropriate behaviour” towards flight attendants of both sexes.
It is asking that the Canadian Human Rights Commission look into Air Canada policies and get rid the program of onboard service managers.
It is doing this because Air Canada has failed to address the complaints of its employees, it says.
