Yesterday, tragedy struck in Pittsburgh when 11 people were shot and killed at Tree of Life Synagogue. The eight men and three women killed included one Canadian, Joyce Fienberg who grew up in Toronto.
Feinberg, who was 75 years old, was named as one of the victims of the shooting on Sunday afternoon. The Toronto native was known to attend service in Forest Hill at Holy Blossom Temple.
In a post on Facebook, the temple confirmed that Feinberg has her confirmation photo on the wall of honour, further explaining that she grew up at the temple in her youth.
All of the victims in the shooting were middle-aged or elderly, with no youths injured. Names were released and Feinberg was identified as being a Canadian who has been living in the Pittsburg suburb of Oakland.
Feinberg's family still lives in the GTA, specifically her brother Bob who lives in Thornhill. CBC reached out to the family and described them as "grief-stricken" due to the shooting, but they continued to remember Joyce as the "most amazing person."
Other friends of the family have taken to social media to remember Joyce. She regularly visited the synagogue where she was killed two times a day.
RIP, Joyce Feinberg. Her husband, like her a long-time friend of my family and my wife's family, died two years ago, and even though the time for saying Kaddish had long passed, she was still going to Tree of Life to say it two times a day. Lovely, lovely woman.— Harry Litman (@harrylitman) October 28, 2018
I didn't want to talk about this yesterday until it was officially confirmed, but Joyce Feinberg, 75, was my grandparents' current next door neighbor. I spoke with my grandmother yesterday who was frantically trying to find out if Joyce was still alive. https://t.co/d08XVmuntH— Jesse Aaron Paul ☀ (@JesseAPaul) October 28, 2018
