An Ex Google Employee Who Wrote That Women Are Less Capable Than Men Is Suing The Company For Discrimination
He's back and looking for "justice."
If you don't remember James Damore, the ex-Google employee who worked as an engineer hit headlines last year for the memo he wrote and handed out in the office about women in the workplace. The offensive 10-page letter outlined his beliefs that women in the technology business are not as successful as their male co-workers because they are biologically less capable. Note that there's actually zero evidence to back up his claims. After the letter quickly went viral five months ago and Damore was quickly fired, you would have thought that would be the last we'd hear of him.
Instead, Damore is back in headlines again and this time it's because he is actually suing Google for discrimination. Who is the discrimination against? white Conservative men. Damore seeks monetary, non-monetary and punitive damages through his suit, his lawyer claiming that Damore and other staff members were "belittled and punished for their heterodox political views, and for the added sin of their birth circumstances of being Caucasians and/or males.' His lawyer adding "you shouldn't have to prove you didn't vote for the president to get a job at Google."
Of course, Google made sure to make it known that they are looking forward to defending themselves throughout the court process. Back during the initial distribution of Damore's letter, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai issued his own letter making sure that fellow Google staff members knew that he was fired immediately due to "advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace," a breach of the company's code of conduct.
Google maintains that Damore was fired for discriminating against woman, not because he was white, male or a Conservative. While we wait for the story to unfold, it will be interesting to see how this court case turns out.
