Two teenagers from Port Alberni are now believed to be suspects in the homicide of two international tourists. The teens, who were originally listed as missing persons, are believed to be involved in the double murder after their burned-out vehicle was found alongside the body of another, unidentified, male. Now the two murder suspects from BC were last spotted in Manitoba and may look completely different.
This all began on July 15, when the bodies of backpackers Lucas Fowler, 23, and his girlfriend, Chynna Deese, 24, were found at the roadside, on a remote section of the Alaska Highway in northern BC The young couple, who are from Australia and the US, were found near their 1986 Chevrolet van, and are believed to have been fatally shot.
Police now believe that two teenagers, initially thought to be missing, were involved in the incident.
Teenagers Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, who are from Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, were initially listed as ‘missing’ after their burned-out truck was found abandoned in BC The pair were thought to be travelling to Whitehorse in the Yukon to find work.
Police discovered McLeod and Schmegelsky’s abandoned truck at the side of Highway 37, just four days after discovering the bodies of the tourists. Two kilometres from the burned-out truck, investigators also found the body of another, unidentified man.
The RCMP have now updated the two teenager’s missing person status to ‘suspects’ after receiving tip-offs from the public that they may be involved in the fatal shooting of Fowler and Deese.
While the teenager’s truck and the unidentified body were located 470 kilometeres southwest of the location of the double-homicide, police say they have reason to believe the cases are connected.
According to RCMP Sergeant Janelle Shoihet, the two teenagers have now left BC and are thought to be travelling to an unknown destination. Police in Manitoba have announced that they have reason to believe the suspects may be in the province, noting that they may have recently been seen in the Gillam area.
The pair were last seen driving a grey, 2011 Toyota Rav 4, but Shoihet noted that may have already changed vehicles and made alterations to their appearances.
McLeod is believed to be around 6’4”, approximately 169 pounds, and has dark brown hair, facial hair, and brown eyes. Schmegelsky is described as being 6’4” tall, approximately 169 pounds, and has sandy brown hair.
The police have confirmed that the men are considered to be highly dangerous, and should not be approached by the public if they are seen. Shiohet warned, “[If you see them] take no action and immediately call 911.”
