What's the difference between Albertans and Americans? Not much, apparently. A recent poll shows that 43% of Albertans feel more similar to the USA than other parts of Canada. We've all seen Albertans sporting American flags at country music festivals or on boats in the summer. Well, it turns out it's not just aesthetic.
A poll was conducted by Research Co. from July 23 to July 25, 2019, taking the opinions of 700 Albertan adults. The poll asked Albertans if they have “more in common with Americans than with those in other parts of Canada.”
As it turns out, almost half of Albertans believe they do have more in common with ‘Merica. On the other side of the token, the exact same percentage, 43%, believe the opposite. As you'd expect in Canada, there were quite a few people who didn't have an opinion on the matter — 14%, to be exact.
It appears both old folks and young people aren't so connected to the rest of Canada. In terms of age groups, both the 18-34-year-olds and 55+ groups counted in at 47% in agreement they have more in common with Americans. The middle group, aged 35-54, brought down the average with only 37% of them agreeing.
When it comes to political views, we’re willing to bet you won’t be surprised about the division here. 56% of Albertans who voted for the United Conservative party (UCP) feel they’re more like Americans than other Canadians. As for the New Democratic Party (NDP) voters, only 29% of them feel a bond to our southern neighbours.
Canada Day every year proves how many of us are actually proud to be Canadian, it turns out the kinship isn’t unanimous. In fact, another recent survey revealed that one in four Canadians wants to separate from Canada. Looks like patriotism doesn’t run deep in the Great North.
With all that said, a Redditor posted yesterday asking the online community if Alberta should “join the USA to become the 51st State,” And surprisingly, the Reddit community was not having it. So regardless if Albertans feel more connected to the USA, we won't be joining them either!
So, some Albertans feel more connected to the USA than to Canada, some want to separate from Canada, and joining the US also doesn’t seem to be a favorable option. Are you as confused as we are?
