Things might be getting a little wet and wild in Alberta tonight. According to Environment Canada, Alberta's severe thunderstorm warnings are something to watch out for tonight. These notifications are calling for a wide variety of elements so be prepared for the worst!

Canada has had some seriously bizarre weather this summer! Just one month ago, parts of Canada actually woke up to snow and hail!

Following the weird winter phase, mother nature decided to throw tornadoes at every prairie province. These tornadoes were considered to be “life-threatening” and some even came with “nickel-sized" hail.

While we had a little bit of a break from the storms, we are back to report that severe thunderstorm warnings and watches have been issued for parts of southern Alberta.

According to the Environment Canada website, the severe thunderstorm watches are in effect for 12 different areas. Four of the 12 areas have also been issued severe thunderstorm warnings.

So if you find yourself in those areas, you may want to take this seriously.

According to the website, the conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing either wind gusts, large hail, heavy rain, or all of the above.

These thunderstorms are anticipated to start this afternoon and last into the evening. Some storms will become more severe than others.

Environment Canada has issued a warning about the dangers of lightning. While it isn't confirmed if lightning will strike in southern Alberta tonight, you should still be aware. Every year, Canadians are killed by lightning strikes so be sure to go indoors as soon as you hear it!

The following areas around Alberta have been issued severe thunderstorm watches:

  • Airdrie - Cochrane - Olds - Sundre
  • Brooks - Strathmore - Vulcan
  • Cardston - Fort Macleod - Magrath
  • City of Calgary
  • Crowsnest Pass - Pincher Creek - Waterton Lakes Nat. Park
  • Cypress Hills Provincial Park - Foremost
  • Drumheller - Three Hills
  • Hanna - Coronation - Oyen
  • Kananaskis - Canmore
  • Lethbridge - Taber - Milk River
  • Medicine Hat - Bow Island - Suffield
  • Okotoks - High River - Claresholm

In terms of the severe thunderstorm warnings, Environment Canada has stated that meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing “very strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and torrential rain.” Similar to the watches, anyone in these areas is encouraged to stay inside when lightning strikes.

Each one of the four areas will be impacted differently as the storm moves over the impacted locations. Be sure to keep an eye out for changing weather patterns as storms can approach fast.

The following areas have been issued serve thunderstorm warnings:

  • Cypress Hills Provincial Park - Foremost
  • Drumheller - Three Hills
  • Hanna - Coronation - Oyen
  • Lethbridge - Taber - Milk River

These storms can be dangerous so be sure to stay inside and always keep an eye on the Environment Canda website. Until this passes, consider catching up on all the Netflix shows you've been neglecting.
