After a series of investigative developments, the BC RCMP are no longer considering 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky as missing.
The two are now wanted as suspects in the murder of three individuals including the deaths of Lucas Fowler, a 23-year-old Australian man, and Chynna Deese, a 24-year-old American woman. The two young men are on the run and were recently seen in Manitoba.
According to Global News, a former classmate of one of the two teens says he had a history of making disturbing statements often describing murder and suicide.
Madison Hempsted told Global News that she shared a class with Schmegelsky in Grade 7 in Port Alberni. Although her interactions with him were limited, they were troubling.
Hempsted stated that he was a weird kid and didn’t really talk to anyone. But when he did, it was often scary. “All he ever said to me was how he wanted to kill me and ways he would do it,” said Hempsted to Global News.
Several interactions with Schmegelsky were the same and often resulted in describing violent acts to her and others. One time he took things farther than normal and described a gruesome scene.
“[Schmegelsky] would say things about how he would cut our heads off and then he would take a gun and put it in his mouth and shoot himself in front of us. Pretty detailed stuff,” she said to Global News.
At the time, the teen and her peers did not think much of the comments and did not assume he was serious about the threats.
The father of Schmegelsky as also spoken out about his son. According to Huffington Post, he suspects his son will die “in a blaze of glory.”
His father stated that in 2005, he struggled with his parent's divorce and his main influences were YouTube and video games.
“He’s on a suicide mission. He wants his pain to end,” his father said to Huffington Post. “Basically, he’s going to be dead today or tomorrow. I know that. Rest in peace, Bryer. I love you. I’m so sorry all this had to happen.”
The two teens have expressed far-right ideology online, with one even posing in Nazi apparel.
The two teens are wanted as the nation-wide hunt continues. Two mayors in northern Manitoba including Churchill and Gillam have even sent out warnings to residents encouraging them to lock their doors.
The Port Alberni, BC teens are six-foot, four inches tall and weigh 169 pounds. McLeod has dark brown hair, facial hair, and brown eyes. Schmegelsky has sandy brown hair. RCMP have noted that they two may have changed their appearance.
Officials have not released details yet on why the two became suspects. RCMP are calling the duo armed and dangerous. Anyone who spots them should not approach and instead, should call 911.
