A fifth possible case of coronavirus has been detected in B.C., as announced by provincial health officials. On February 14, as part of their provincial bi-weekly update, health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix announced that a woman in her 30s has tested positive for the virus following her return from Shanghai. This would mark the fifth B.C. coronavirus case since the outbreak emerged globally.

The coronavirus outbreak has already led to four confirmed cases across the province. Authorities are waiting to hear official confirmation of this likely fifth case from the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg, as reported by CTV News

Richmond News says that the woman had not been in the Hubei province in China and that her symptoms appeared as she landed in Vancouver airport from Shanghai.

She contacted health officials subsequently and tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, February 10.

The woman lives in an Interior Health region, though her place of residence has not been revealed, "in order to maintain the privacy of the patient," the B.C Ministry of Health told Richmond News.

The other four patients that have the virus, which has been named as COVID-19 by the WHO, are recovering at home, explained CTV News. Health officers are continuing to drop in and monitor their conditions.

Henry revealed that the first few patients are responding well. The first patient in B.C. that contracted the virus has returned negative results for the virus this past week, reports the Vancouver Sun

Another test would be administered to him to confirm that he does not have the virus any longer.

People across Canada are taking precautions against the virus as cases have been confirmed in multiple provinces.

Stores have sold out of protective face masks, flights have been cancelled and many are choosing to self-quarantine themselves upon returning from China despite not having visited the province of Hubei, the epicentre of the virus.

Winnipeg should have confirmation of the fifth case within the next 48 hours.
