Canadian police are concerned that there may be more victims out there after charging a former lifeguard who used his position to access children. The Penticton lifeguard was charged with child pornography and several other charges. While two victims have been identified, police believe that there are more. Some may not even have known that they were being sexually exploited.
Edward Casavant, a 54-year-old man from Penticton, British Columbia, has been arrested following an outstanding warrant. While arrested on May 15, 2019, he was also charged with 10 counts relating to a number of alleged child pornography and sexual assault incidents.
According to Penticton RCMP in a news release, Casavant was a long-time lifeguard at a Summerland recreation facility. In November 2018, RCMP received information about Casavant that sparked a child sexual assault and pornography investigation.
Casavant, also known as Eddie Spaghetti to many of the kids that attended the facility, was employed as a lifeguard for over 30 years, beginning in the late 1980s. During this time, RCMP have speculated that Casavant was able to gain access to school-aged children through his lifeguard position.
Not only did Casavant work as a lifeguard for an employer, but he also volunteered his time. During many local summer camps and other community events, Casavant would work as a lifeguard. In all regards, RCMP believe that he “may have had access to children in this capacity.”
Following his arrest earlier this week, Casavant has been charged with 10 counts relating to incidents that took place between 2008 and 2014. Some of the charges include making child pornography, sexual assault of a minor, or secretly recording nudity in a private place.
Here is a list of all of Casavant’s charges:
- 2 counts of making or publishing child pornography
- 1 count of importing or distributing child pornography
- 1 count of possession of child pornography
- 1 count of accessing child pornography
- 1 count of secretly observe/record nudity in private place
- 1 count of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability
- 1 count of sexual assault
- 1 count of sexual interference of person under 16
- 1 count of Invitation to sexual touching under 16
While two victims have been identified, RCMP believe there are additional victims who have not reported any wrongdoing. RCMP say some may not even be aware that they were a victim of his crimes.
RCMP are now asking anyone with information on this matter to come forward by calling the Penticton RCMP tip line at (250)276-2177.
