PETA has recently released a horrifying video of a BC farm showcasing the terrible living conditions that the pigs are currently living in. The footage was leaked by an internal source and has now been shared publically. PETA and the SPCA are investigating the BC farm after footage of the horrific conditions was leaked.
PETA recently released leaked footage to the public showing the horrifying conditions at a pig farm in Abbotsford, BC to raise awareness. According to CTV, the video was captured at Excelsior Hog Farm in February and March of this year.
Dan Paden, vice president at PETA, told Narcity in an interview that the video was captured by a concerned member of the public who had reason to believe that the pigs were suffering. He documented what he saw and then passed it along to PETA for an investigation. The citizen has asked to remain anonymous.
In the video, you can see a large number of pigs inside a barn. Dead piglets can be seen as well as a larger pig’s corpse. Mother sows can be seen in small, individual cells no bigger than their bodies.
Disclaimer: this footage is hard to watch.
Along with the blatantly terrible living conditions, some pigs are seen with abnormal growths on their bodies and some barely able to walk because of them. According to a release sent by PETA to Narcity, these are “volleyball-sized umbilical hernias.”
"Mother pigs at Excelsior Hog Farm spend their wretched lives inside cramped metal crates, unable to turn around or attend to their piglets, many of whom are left to die slowly, just out of their reach," says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch.
Excelsior Hog Farm is an Abbotsford, British Columbia-based pig farm. According to PETA, they send pigs to Johnston’s which is a Chilliwack-based slaughterhouse. Johnston’s claims to be working alongside suppliers that raise pigs under “a clear standard of care according to best treatment practices.” They then sell their product to realtors across BC including Choices Markets.
PETA has now asked the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to investigate the farm for suspected violations of the province's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. They are also calling on Jonhston’s to reconsider their business relationship with the farm.
In the video, you can see that there are no time stamps on the video. Paden told Narcity that he does not this as being an issue for the investigation.
“The eye witness was willing to provide a statement to the SPCA. If necessary, they can testify should the lack of time stamp present any type of challenge,” explained Paden.
According to Paden, treatment like this is not uncommon and some the living conditions are normalized under law. For instance, the crate that the mother pigs are in are up to industry standards. Because of the tiny living conditions and the constant insemination of the mother pigs, some piglets will not make it.
Paden has stated that the large number of deaths in the video could be due to filthy living conditions. It is also due to how often the mother pigs has given birth in their lifetime. The more times she has been inseminated, the higher the risk for unhealthy and dead babies.
“The main hope for the party that captured the footage and the best hope for pigs is that people who see the video stop eating pigs. That is the best way to stop the cruelty that is on that video,” said Paden.
When asked if this was the first pig case in BC, Paden was unsure. “I have heard of chickens and cows, but never pigs.” Since the video has been made public, PETA has not heard from the Abbotsford farm.
Narcity has reached out to Excelsior Hog Farm for comment and we will update this story when we receive a response.
