Black smoke was seen across the skies all in the Lower Mainland after a massive Metro Vancouver fire burned through a North Richmond recycling plant.

According to Twitter updates from Richmond Fire Chief Tim Wilkinson, the fire happened on Saturday evening, August 29.

Richmond News reports that the site, located near Knox Way and Savage Road, recycles plastic; a City of Richmond spokesperson said this makes it harder to fight the flames.

Officials haven't said what the cause of the fire was yet.

By 9:30 p.m. the same night, the plastic bales outside the building were being extinguished and smaller fires were being put out within the building.
