A world-renowned Boston university has just announced a new Canadian campus. Northeastern University is launching a Vancouver campus which will be located on West Georgia St. The new campus will be moving into its permanent location at 400 West Georgia St. in 2021.
Northeastern has decided to launch in Vancouver in response to the growing demand for computer scientists on the Canadian West coast. Northeastern University's President Joseph E. Aoun, said in the news release that Vancouver’s strengths and goals line up directly with Northeastern’s.
The 24-story tower will be comprised of steel-framed cubes arranged around a central core. The renderings are stunning and the modern tower will add to the city's beautiful skyline offer a unique draw to Vancouver's downtown entrance.
Programs of study at the new Vancouver campus will include information systems, artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity, among others. Information design and visualization are up for consideration.
Northeastern is a private research university that is categorized as a RI (Research I) institution by the Carnegie Classification of Higher Education. This means it is one of the world’s universities that engage in the highest levels of research activity.
Vancouver’s campus will be joining Northeastern’s global network that includes campuses in Boston, Seattle, the S.F. Bay Area, Charlotte, North Carolina, Toronto, and London.
Northeastern Vancouver will work with the Toronto campus to develop Canadian operations. Vancouver will also join with campuses in Seattle and Silicon Valley to form a regional high-tech network and a “global innovation ecosystem in the Pacific Northwest.”
“Vancouver and Northeastern are shaping the technology-driven economy that is human-centered, giving learners and innovators the right opportunities for continuous reinvention,” he continued. The university plans to equip Vancouver’s graduates with the skills and experience to delve into high technology jobs. This new development is sure to be a game-changer in Vancouver’s tech industry.
The new university plans to expand students' skillsets and schools of thought in the tech space. “A concept of lifelong and experiential learning that will liberate students from outdated career models and give them the opportunity to prosper over the course of their lives,” said the news release.
As you’d expect, the faculty at this new institution will be industry leaders of all types. For one, Bethany Edmunds, associate dean and chair of the Computer Science faculty was recently named one of the Most Influential Women in STEM, received a YWCA Women of Distinction award, and landed in Vancouver’s Forty Under 40 in 2018. That’s just one example of the innovators who will be shaping young minds at Northeastern’s Vancouver Campus.
The way we work and engage with the world is rapidly changing, and the only way to stay relevant is to always be learning.
