While almost everyone can agree that they love pizza, there's one divisive question that leaves both sides absolutely livid: does pineapple belong on pizza? Full disclaimer, I believe it does. Am I a trash person? Perhaps. But Vancouver, B.C. is actually where the most pineapple on pizza in Canada is ordered according to payment company Square's newest data.

That could mean that it's not just me, it's the environment where I grew up.

According to their data, the pineapple preference is strongest in Vancouver. Then, it actually weakens out the further east you go in the country.

Plus, there was a recent study last year that showed 76% of residents in B.C. agreed that they loved a bit of pineapple on pizza.

Narcity spoke with Marlon English, general manager of The Parlour, one of Vancouver’s favourite pizza spots to hear their take.

They serve up the Five-O, a pizza topped with black forest ham and roasted pineapple. “The pizza, on the whole, is definitely one of the most popular and it’s our take on the Hawaiian pizza,” he said.

When asked about the pineapple dilemma, he confirmed that the struggle is real. “There’s always a debate, should fruit be on a pizza? Some people like it, some people don’t.”

You'll either be proud or embarrassed by the fact that Hawaiian pizza topped with ham pineapple is a Canadian invention.

In Vancouver, Square's data revealed that 10% of pizza orders requested that tropical golden fruity topping. Even in Kelowna, B.C., one out of ever 20 pizzas had pineapple on it.

Karisa Marra, a business expert at Square, said that this data helps to set the record straight.

“Although a small number of Canadians, mostly in Vancouver, are pineapple pizza lovers, overall, regardless of what anyone says, the vast majority of pizza eaters simply aren't ordering it,” she said in a press release.

So, if you have no tolerance for fruit on pizza, you'll find your people out east.

For those civilized members of society amongst us who love the sweet and savoury combo, the West Coast welcomes you.
