Someone In Vancouver Is Vandalizing Carshare Vehicles With Rocks, Compost & Oil
"East Van has a real car share hater."
In case you haven't noticed, Vancouver is absolutely packed with carshare vehicles. More specifically, Car2Go and Evo. If you rely on carshares to get around, you probably love seeing them parked all over the city. Though, it seems some people aren't too excited about these cars being parked in their neighbourhoods. There have been Vancouver Car2Go and Evo cars vandalized in the most East Van way possible.
On Monday, January 6, a Reddit user shared a photo of a Car2Go and an Evo car parked, one behind the other, near Brunswick Street and 5th Avenue in East Vancouver.
"East Van has a real car share hater. These cars on my block were covered in compost(?), rocks, sawdust and then drenched in oil...very classy," the post read.
According to a passerby who spoke with CTV News, one of the side mirrors on the Car2Go had been broken.
The comments thread under the post is filled with assumptions and anecdotes surrounding the peculiar case of vandalism.
Some people feel that it could be a product of anger towards carsharing vehicles for taking up parking in a neighbourhood thatto give.
"This is right near my apartment. We barely ever have any car shares parked around here (two is the most I’d see) but I can confirm that there is a lack of street parking for these residences," wrote one Redditor.
"I have a feeling this is based on parking frustration. I ride my bike/walk to work and only move my car once a week, and once had it lightly vandalized and written 'Move your car' on my hood," they continued.
One user points out that the vandalism could easily backfire. "Nice move idiot. Now no Evo or Car2Go users are going to book these cars since they're covered in trash, which means they'll be there even longer."
One user says that the City of Vancouver has been made aware of the vandalism. Narcity has reached out to the City for its response to the situation and will update the story once we hear back.
However, it's worth noting that Car2Go parking woes in the city won't be an issue for much longer.
Car2Go recently announced that. Their last day of operation in Vancouver will be February 29, so you can expect the cars to be taken off the roads next month.
With Car2Go peeling out of the city, maybe rideshare can pick up the slack, since Vancouver has been.
As for the compost vandal, keep your eyes open for more piles of debris in your neighbourhood.
