Canadian Millennials Don't Just Want Jobs, They Want Jobs With Promotions
Money plays a big role too.
According to a new survey, when looking for jobs, Canadian millennials want ones that have the best opportunity for advancement in the workplace. Canadian millennial jobs are in growing industries that don't have you stuck at the same position for your whole life. Basically, millennials know what they want out of their careers and they want a whole lot of promotions.
The survey on job wants was conducted by Abacus Data in the summer of 2019 and 2,000 Canadian millennials were surveyed. It focuses mainly on what millennials want out of their jobs.
68 percent of survey respondents said they want to work in an organization where the opportunities for advancement are plentiful and tied to significant financial benefits.
"Since unemployment in Canada is at its lowest level in four decades, it's critical for employers to highlight their competitive advantages," said Catherine Fortin LeFaivre, public affairs advisor for Cars and Jobs who commissioned the survey, in a press release.
According to this survey, if an employer doesn't have room for growth within the company that also offers higher pay and other finanical benefits, millennials won't be flocking to them in droves.
It's not just enough to have growth within the company though. The survey found that industry also matters to millennials.
63 per cent of respondents want to work in a sector that has experienced significant growth recently and will continue to grow.
According to IBISWorld, some of the growing industries around the world in 2019 are cannabis production, language instruction and manufacturing.
Among those, one of Canada's fastest growing industries this year is clean energy.
Also, 61 percent of people surveyed said they want to work "in a sector that's at the forefront of technological advancements and which contributes to improving people's day to day lives."
The survey also looked at where Canadian millennials are most likely to find and see job ads. 59 percent of respondents said job websites were in their top three while only 30 percent said the same thing about LinkedIn.
