Summer is around the corner and many students and families are preparing to leave the country for vacation. Since it's almost time to begin planning your summer travels, we've gathered up a list of places that the Government of Canada is advising Canadians they should not travel to due to safety concerns.

Travel advisories can vary from low-security threats to the Government suggesting that you don't visit the country at all under any circumstances. These advisories are issued to ensure that Canadians are informed and aware of the ongoing safety and security issues regarding possible travel destinations.

As of May 1, 2019, new travel advisories have been issued in regards to 12 countries that Canadians may travel to.

India

The Government of Canada is suggesting travellers use a high degree of caution when travelling throughout specific regions of India due to natural disasters. 

According to the government, the coastal regions of India including Odisha are at risk to be hit by Cyclone Fani. They're suggesting Canadians avoid all non-essential travel to this area. 

They're also suggesting you avoid all travel to the western border near Bangladesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and border areas with Pakistan. For more information on the specific regions, click here.

United States

The Government of Canada is suggesting that travellers exercise normal security precautions when travelling to the United States. Petty crime, violent crime, fraud and threats of terrorism are all safety and security issues travellers should be aware of. 

Most recently, the government added a new notice on May 2, 2019, relating to Measles in the United States. Back in January 2019, another health notice was released concerning the Zika virus in the United States.

Venezuela

You should avoid all travel to Venezuela at this, whether you're travelling for non-essential or essential reasons. The level of violent crime is substantial and the political and economic situations are decreasing. 

There is also a suspected military uprising and the basic living conditions have declined recently. There is also a travel warning regarding Zika virus in Venezuela.

Argentina

You can exercise normal security precautions when travelling to Argentina. Their latest updates include the removal of information on "trade union strikes" throughout Argentina. Petty crime near popular tourist areas and bus and train stations are also another security issue to consider.

There's also a Zika virus notice issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Puerto Rico

You can exercise normal security precautions when travelling to Argentina. Demonstrations also occur in Puerto Rico from time to time. During these demonstrations, peaceful protests could turn violent at any given moment. Travellers should try to avoid large areas where these gatherings are taking place.

France

The Government of Canada is suggesting travellers exercise a high degree of caution in France. There have been ongoing Yellow Vests protests since November 2018. During protests, acts of violence and vandalism have occurred. 

Petty crime has been reported throughout major tourist areas, including Paris. Major department stores, train and bus stations, public transportation and sightseeing attractions can be targeted for petty crime.

Belize

All Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution when travelling throughout Belize. According to the government agency, there is a high rate of violent crime throughout the country. 

The Public Health Agency of Canada also issued a notice regarding Zika virus when travelling to the region.

Benin

All travellers should avoid non-essential travel to Northern Benin and the Nigeria border region of Benin due to increased crime and even the threat of banditry and kidnapping in the latter. 

The government suggests avoiding all travel to W National Park also due to the risk of banditry and the high risk of kidnapping.

Egypt 

Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Egypt, especially in regards to the Sinai Peninsula (excluding Sharm el-Sheikh) and the Western desert and Livyan border. These areas are not safe due to terrorist activity, military operations and presence of armed groups.

If you decide to travel to Egypt, you should stay informed on the ongoing security situation and plan accordingly. The government also suggested planning your trip with a well-known Egyptian travel agency.

Bolivia

Due to natural disasters and unpredictable climate, the government suggests that Canadians exercise a high degree of caution when travelling throughout Bolivia. The recent landslide in La Paz could cause chaos for travellers.

In addition, political and social tensions also pose security and safety threats to visitors. A Zika virus notice has been issued for Canadians travelling to Bolivia.

Colombia

Canadians should avoid all travel to multiple regions throughout Colombia. The following areas have a risk of kidnapping and violent crime due to illegal armed groups and criminal organizations. The region 20 km near the border of Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador. You should also avoid Buenaventura and Tumaco.

You should also avoid all non-essential travel to 15 other areas of Columbia. A health notice regarding Zika virus has also been issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Trinidad and Tobago

The government is suggesting Canadians take a high degree of caution when travelling to the island of Trinidad. This precaution is due to the threat of violent crime. The government is also suggesting Canadians take normal security precautions if they're travelling to the island of Tobago. 

A health notice has been issued regarding Zika virus as well.
