Only One Canadian University Made The Top 20 In A Global Ranking Of Universities
But Canada's schools are still doing well.
There are a lot of post-secondary institutions across Canada, but only one Canadian university cracked the top 20 of a ranking of universities. The latest Canadian university rankings aren't the best in the world but we're still getting recognized on the international stage.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 has the University of Toronto at spot 18 on the list, just making its way into the top 20. While it's the only Canadian university to make it into the top 20 that doesn't mean that the rest of Canadian universities fared badly.
"Canada’s top universities have risen up the table," states the report.
To get the rankings, Times Higher Education assessed almost 1,400 post-secondary institutions across 92 countries. Those schools were then judged based on 13 performance indicators which were grouped into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.
The University of Toronto ranked highly in citations, research, and international outlook. Citations looks at "the average number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally", research is based on the productivity of said research and the university's reputation and international outlook is all about how many international students and staff the school has and how much collaboration there is with other places in the world.
Overall, the University of Toronto has a score of 85.5 out of 100. That's just ten points less than the top university in the rankings, Oxford.
In the top 20, most schools are located in either the U.S. or the UK. The only university in the top 20 that isn't in Canada, the U.S. or the UK is in Switzerland.
Other Canadian schools made the list but you just have to move further down it to find them. The University of British Columbia is closest to the University of Toronto, coming in at number 34.
McGill is ranked at spot number 42 and then there's a gap between it and the next Canadian school, McMaster University, which is only at 72.
Canada's lowest ranked shcool is the University of Lethbridge which comes in at 1001+ on the list.
Unfortunately, two Canadian schools actually fell out of the top 200 for this year's ranking. Both Western University and the University of Calgary slipped into the 201-250 range this year.
But there's always room for improvement especially when you're not at the top. You can see how other Canadian schools were ranked here.
