Carlton Cards And Papyrus Stores Are Closing In Canada Next Month & The Sales Have Begun
Your childhood card source is shutting down.
Pretty soon some familiar storefronts will shut their doors and you won't be able to go in and get a singing birthday card or a fancy greeting anymore. Carlton Cards is closing down along with Papyrus stores across Canada. However, you might still be able to find those specific brands in other stores that also sell these kinds of products.
On January 22, it was announced that every single North American location of these two chains would be closing, which includes all their Canadian spots.
There are 76 locations here and at least one in almost every province except P.E.I. and New Brunswick. Carlton Cards locations make up 59 of those and Papyrus has 17.
Along with the Canadian stores, another 178 locations in the U.S. will close which will affect about 1,400 employees.
According to CTV News, most of the closures will happen in four to six weeks and will leave Hallmark as the last remaining big player in the retail greeting card game in Canada.
An "everything must go" sale sign was spotted at a Papyrus store in CF Markville mall in Ontario and according to CTV News, the going-out-of-business sales are happening at physical stores in both Canada and the U.S.
Dominique Schurman, CEO of Schurman Retail Group, which operates and manages the two stores, told CTV News that the closures were a "difficult decision."
It was brought on by the company not being able to "realign our stores to fit today's shopping environment."
A 2019 report from IBISWorld stated that the Canadian greeting card industry has "grappled with the advent of paperless substitutes, which have rendered some industry products obsolete."
The industry has also seen a decline of 4.4% per year between 2014 and 2019.
"Consumers' growing use of e-cards, or electronic greeting cards, has constrained demand for traditional greeting cards and postcards," the report stated.
Papyrus is currently offering 20% off all full-priced items online but all sales are final. It is not confirmed whether this is a store-closing sale.
