Students are getting help when they need it most. However, some of them might have already been receiving some financial support from the government. When it comes to the CESB and CERB, you can't double-dip. You can only receive one or the other.

The Canada Emergency Student Benefit, announced on April 22, provides young Canadians attending postsecondary institutions with $1,250 a month from May to August.

Students with dependents or disabilities can get $1,750 a month.

However, some students who met the qualifications for the Canada Emergency Relief Benefit, which provides $2,000 a month, may already be receiving that. This includes students who had jobs which they lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you're a student and you've already qualified for the CERB, you can't also apply for the CESB. The latter benefit is there for students who didn't meet earlier requirements.

According to the Huffington Post, if you already receive the CERB and apply for the CESB, you'll disqualify yourself from the $2,000 monthly payment by receiving the $1,250 benefit instead.

Some of the same rules still apply to the student benefit. If you're attending school and have a job but are making less than $1,000 a month, you can get the $1,250 payment.

Details on how to apply for the CESB have not been made available yet, as the measure still needs to be introduced and passed through the House Of Commons.

The CESB has received some criticism from NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who tweeted that the CERB should just be made universal.

"We’re glad the government is turning its focus to helping students, but another complicated system is not what students need," Singh wrote. "Make the CERB universal so that no one gets left behind. And so that students - and anyone else who needs help - can get 2,000$ right away."

The government also announced the introduction of the Canada Student Services Grant, which will provide up to $5000 in tuition payments for people who volunteer over the summer.
